2019 EE BAFTA nominations: The Favourite gains favouritism with twelve nods

With the Golden Globes now out of the way, the BAFTAs have contributed their own group of contenders as the 2019 Oscar race intensifies.

The historical dramedy The Favourite, which explores an unlikely love triangle between Queen Anne, her close friend, and a servant girl, is out in front with a dominant twelve nominations, including a mention for Best Film and a Best Director nod for filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos.

No stranger to BAFTA success, Olivia Colman competes in the Leading Actress category for her portrayal of the royal monarch, while co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz go-head for the Supporting Actress gong.

Additionally, it also receives multiple technical noms as well as a place on the Outstanding British Film shortlist.

The Mexican drama Roma and the music-based tearjerker A Star is Born also performed well, with seven nominations each, including Best Film.

Having won Best Director for Gravity back in 2014, Alfonso Cuarón will be looking for a repeat win, with Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) among his rival nominees.

Cooper himself is also in contention for a Leading Actor accolade for his performance in A Star is Born, while co-star Lady Gaga is acknowledged in the Leading Actress category.

The crime caper BlackKKlansman, and the recent Golden Globe-winning dramedy Green Book are also placed on the Best Film shortlist, with the former earning directing and writing nods for filmmaker Spike Lee.

After its shock success at the Globes last Sunday, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is up for seven awards, including Outstanding British Film, and another Leading Actor nod for Rami Malek and his portrayal of legendary singer Freddie Mercury.

Malek faces stern competition in his category from fellow Oscar contenders Christian Bale (Vice) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) with the fifth slot taken by Steve Coogan for his portrayal of beloved comedian star Stan Laurel in the fact-based dramedy Stan & Ollie.

Meanwhile, recent Golden Globe winner Glenn Close earns a Leading Actress nod for The Wife and is joined by Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and surprise nominee Viola Davis (Widows).

In the Supporting Actress category, Amy Adams (Vice) receives her seventh nomination for her portrayal of Lynne Cheney and is joined by British star Claire Foy (First Man) and Australian beauty Margot Robbie (Mary Queen of Scots).

In the case of Supporting Actor, British performer Richard E. Grant finally receives his first BAFTA nod for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and faces off against Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy), Adam Driver (BlackKklansman) and last year’s category winner Sam Rockwell (Vice).

Elsewhere, the rest of the Outstanding British Film line-up is contested by the aforementioned Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite and Stan & Ollie, as well as the documentary McQueen, and indie thrillers Beast and You Were Never Really Here.

In other major fields, the Polish drama Cold War picked up four noms including Best Film Not in the English Language while filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski receives a shock Best Director mention.

The Best Animated Film line-up sees Marvel’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse battle it out with Pixar’s Incredibles 2 and the stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs while the powerful First World War documentary They Shall Not Grow Old is in contention for Best Documentary alongside the likes of Free Solo and McQueen.

As previously revealed, this year’s EE Rising Star Award will be contested by British actresses Cynthia Erivo and Letitia Wright, American star LaKeith Stanfield, and Irish duo Jessie Buckley and Barry Keoghan.

Once again, BAFTA made a number of surprise omissions, with recent Golden Globe winner Regina King overlooked for her supporting turn in If Beale Street Could Talk.

Additionally, fellow Oscar contenders Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born) and John David Washington (BlackKklansman) were also ignored while the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther could only muster one technical nod despite an impressive showing with the guilds.

The 72nd EE BAFTA Film Awards will take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 10 February, with British comedian star Joanna Lumley returning to host for a second consecutive year.
