2018 Emmy Awards: Game of Thrones, Mrs. Maisel and Assassination of Gianni Versace among leading victors

It was a memorable night for the stars of television as they came together to celebrate the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards.

After a one-year hiatus from the small-screen, HBO’s Game of Thrones scored its third win in the Outstanding Drama Series category after seeing off competition from the likes of Netflix duo The Crown and Stranger Things, and last year’s victor The Handmaid’s Tale.

The seventh series of the fantasy epic also bagged star Peter Dinklage his third Emmy win for his lauded supporting turn as Tyrion Lannister, ahead of co-star (and on-screen brother) Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Elsewhere, the final outing of FX’s spy drama The Americans claimed two key prizes for writing and a swansong Lead Actor victory for Welsh star Matthew Rhys as undercover KGB agent Philip Jennings.

However, co-star Keri Russell suffered defeat in her own category, as British starlet Claire Foy took home the Lead Actress award for her portrayal of royal monarch Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s historical drama The Crown.

Among the other strong nominees to miss out on the gong included Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and previous winners Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale).

The Crown also celebrated a notable win in the directing category, which was awarded to celebrated filmmaker Stephen Daldry for his work on the episode ‘Paterfamilias’.

Another happy Brit was Thandie Newton as she saw off the likes of Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) and last year’s category victor Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale) to win Supporting Actress for her turn as theme park host Maeve Millay in HBO’s Westworld.

On the funny side of things, the absence of HBO’s Veep allowed Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to clinch five awards, including the prestigious Outstanding Comedy Series gong – the first streaming series to achieve that honour.

The period dramedy, which centres on an aspiring female comedian in 1950s America, also bagged two wins for creator Amy Sherman-Palladino while stars Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein prevailed in the Lead Actress and Supporting Actress categories for their respective roles as Miriam “Midge” Maisel and Susie Meyerson.

On top of beating the likes of Allison Janney (Mom) and Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie), Brosnahan also broke Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s six-year winning run of victories in the Lead Actress field.

Elsewhere, HBO’s Barry made a solid impact with major accolades as co-creator and star Bill Hader landed Lead Actor for his performance as mentally-unstable hit man Barry Berkman ahead of the likes of Ted Danson (The Good Place), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and last year’s winner Donald Glover (Atlanta).

Additionally, veteran co-star Henry Winkler finally celebrated his first Primetime Emmy success after taking home Supporting Actor for his role as Gene Cousineau in the dark comedy.

In the limited fields, the FX anthology series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story landed three key wins, including the coveted Outstanding Limited Series prize ahead of Netflix’s Godless and the Sky Original drama Patrick Melrose.

Central star Darren Criss saw off strong competition from the likes of Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Patrick Melrose) to win Lead Actor for his lauded portrayal of real-life serial killer Andrew Cunanan, while creator Ryan Murphy was honoured with the directing prize.

Meanwhile, Regina King tasted Emmy success for the third time in four years after securing the Lead Actress gong for her performance as grieving mother Latrice Butler in the Netflix crime series Seven Seconds.

There was a double feat for Netflix’s western drama Godless, as Jeff Daniels and Merrit Wever won the supporting actor and actress categories for their respective roles as Frank Griffin and Mary Agnes McNue.

Finally, there was a case of déjà vu for British writer Charlie Brooker as he and colleague William Bridges took home the writing accolade for their work on the Black Mirror installment USS Callister.

However, the most satisfying moment of the evening came from multi-award-winning director Glenn Weiss, who made headlines by proposing to long-time girlfriend Jan Svendsen during his acceptance speech for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for his work on the 2018 Academy Awards.

As to be expected, a number of multi-nominated series came away from last night’s ceremony empty-handed, including Atlanta, Black-ish, GLOW, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, Stranger Things, and This is Us.
