The nominations for the 62nd BAFTA Television Awards have been revealed.
The BBC historical drama Wolf Hall leads the way with an impressive ten nods, including four in the major categories.
After winning an Oscar last month for his supporting role in Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies, seasoned star Mark Rylance will be looking to add another award to his CV after earning a Leading Actor nomination for his portrayal of Thomas Cromwell.
Co-stars Claire Foy and Anton Lesser are also acknowledged in the Leading Actress and Supporting Actor categories for their respective performances as Anne Boleyn and Sir Thomas More, though fellow cast member Damian Lewis was overlooked for his role as King Henry VIII.
The television adaptation of the Hilary Mantel novel also competes in a low-key Drama Series line-up that is rounded off by Sky Atlantic’s The Last Panthers and Channel 4 duo Humans and No Offence.
Meanwhile, Channel 4’s This is England ’90 and BBC One’s Doctor Foster lock horns in the Miniseries category alongside BBC Two’s London Sky and Sky’s The Enfield Haunting.
In the case of This is England, the third and final spinoff series to the acclaimed 2006 film also scored two acting nods for cast members Stephen Graham in Leading Actor, and Chanel Cresswell in Supporting Actress.
However, the former finds himself shortlisted in a tough field that includes the aforementioned Rylance, as well as Idris Elba (Luther) and Ben Whishaw (London Spy).
With Doctor Foster a ratings hit last year, chief star Suranne Jones finds herself in contention for a Leading Actress gong for her role as scorned wife and doctor Gemma Foster.
However, Sheridan Smith will be looking to nab a second BAFTA after earning a repeat nod for her performance as cancer-stricken journalist Lisa Lynch in BBC One’s The C-Word.
The fourth slot in the Leading Actress line-up goes to disabled performer Ruth Madeley for her role in the BBC Three drama Don’t Take My Baby, which is also up for the Single Drama prize.
Elsewhere, British veteran Sir Ian McKellen receives his first ever BAFTA TV nod for his supporting turn as Norman in the television adaptation of the 1980 play The Dresser.
Coincidentally, Sir Tom Courtenay (who originated the role of Norman in the 1983 film adaptation of The Dresser), also earns a Supporting Actor nod for his performance in ITV’s Unforgotten.
Meanwhile, fourteen-year-old Liverpudlian starlet Eleanor Worthington-Cox earns a surprise Supporting Actress nom for her appearance in The Enfield Haunting, with Michelle Gomez (Doctor Who) and Lesley Manville (River) among her rival nominees.
On the humorous side of things, Peter Kay’s Car Share has dominated the comedy fields with multiple mentions, including Scripted Comedy and double acting nods for stars Peter Kay and Sian Gibson.
The hit BBC sitcom faces competition in the Scripted Comedy category from E4’s Chewing Gum, BBC Three’s People Just Do Nothing, and the final series of Channel 4’s Peep Show.
In the Male Comedy Performance line-up, Kay faces off against Hugh Bonneville (W1A), Toby Jones (Detectorists) and Javone Prince (The Javone Prince Show), while the Female Comedy Performance field is contested by Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum), Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) and Miranda Hart (Miranda).
Elsewhere, ITV duo Coronation Street and Emmerdale, and BBC pair EastEnders and Holby City go head-to-head in the Soap & Continuing Drama field, while the International category includes the likes of The Good Wife, Narcos and Transparent.
The other notable programmes in contention for BAFTA awards are Adele at the BBC, Britain’s Got Talent, Gogglebox, The Great British Bake Off, Have I Got News for You, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, QI, and Strictly Come Dancing.
Despite missing out on a Drama Series nomination, BBC One’s Poldark contests the public-voted Radio Times Award alongside the likes of Doctor Foster, Peter Kay’s Car Share and Making a Murderer.
This year’s event will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 8 May, with Entertainment Performance contender Graham Norton on hosting duties for a fourth consecutive ceremony.
