The nominations for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.
As expected, HBO’s Game of Thrones dominates the drama field with a bulky 23 nominations that include the coveted Outstanding Drama Series prize which it won last year.
Additionally, the lauded sixth series of the fantasy epic also secured five mentions for its cast with two-time Supporting Actor winner Peter Dinklage in contention again as Tyrion Lannister.
Dinklage faces off against co-star and first time nominee Kit Harington as Jon Snow while British performers Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and first-time nominee Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) all compete against each other in the Supporting Actress category.
In Outstanding Drama Series, Thrones faces versatile competition from a variety of exceptional programmes including returning contenders Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey and House of Cards, while FX’s period spy drama The Americans and the hacking-based thriller Mr. Robot receive their first nominations.
Last year’s Lead Actress winner Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) will be looking to defend her crown as she squares off against Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Keri Russell (The Americans) while the Lead Actor category is contested by the likes of Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards).
The notable Supporting Actress/Actor candidates include Dame Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey), Maura Tierney (The Affair), Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul), Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline) and Jon Voight (Ray Donovan).
