2014 BAFTA nominations: Gravity leads the way, 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle dominate again

With just over a week to go until the Oscar nominations are announced, the British have once again revealed their nominees for 2014 as the awards race begins to hot up.

Sci-fi blockbuster Gravity is out in front with a weighty eleven nominations including Best Film and Outstanding British film while director Alfonso Cuaron and actress Sandra Bullock are also recognised in their own categories.

Historical drama 12 Years a Slave and crime caper American Hustle are tied for second with ten nominations each and are also competing in the coveted Best Film category along with sea-based thriller Captain Phillips and British dramedy Philomena.

Cuaron will battle it out for the Best Director award with British duo Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) and Steve McQueen (12 Years) plus David O. Russell (American Hustle) and Martin Scorsese (Wolf of Wall Street).
The Outstanding British Film category features a six-strong lineup consisting of Gravity and Philomena plus Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Rush, Saving Mr Banks and The Selfish Giant.
In the acting stakes, British pair Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years) and Christian Bale (American Hustle) will contest Best Actor along with veteran Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (Wolf of Wall Street) and Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips).

Best Actress sees Sandra Bullock (Gravity) up against Hollywood heavyweights Amy Adams (American Hustle) and Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) plus British stars Judi Dench (Philomena, the 15th acting nomination of her BAFTA career) and Emma Thompson (Mr Banks).

In the Supporting categories, Jared Leto’s surprise snub for Dallas Buyers Club paves the way for Michael Fassbender (12 Years) to potentially win Supporting Actor but he faces stiff competition from Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Matt Damon (Behind the Candelabra) and newcomers Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) and Daniel Bruhl (Rush). The latter two have now hit the main guilds going into next week’s Oscar announcement.

Supporting Actress sees Jennifer Lawrence (America Hustle) up against Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years) as well as Hollywood heavyweights Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and Oprah Winfrey (The Butler). British star Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) completes the lineup having been overlooked by BAFTA in previous times.

However there were several notable (and disappointing!) snubs in the acting categories including Meryl Streep (August: Osage County), Matthew McConaughey (and Leto for Dallas Buyers Club), Idris Elba and Naomie Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Robert Redford (All is Lost), Michael Douglas (Behind the Candelabra), Adele Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Colour) and June Squibb (Nebraska).

Cloud Atlas, Her, Man of Steel and Prisoners were amongst the high-profile films to be completely ignored for nominations.

The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place on Sunday 16th February at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden. Comedian/actor Stephen Fry returns as host for the ninth time with the ceremony being broadcast on BBC One.
