With just over a week to go until the Oscar nominations are announced, the British have once again revealed their nominees for 2014 as the awards race begins to hot up.
The sci-fi blockbuster Gravity is out in front with a weighty eleven nominations, including Best Film and Outstanding British film, while director Alfonso Cuarón and actress Sandra Bullock are also recognised in their own categories.
The slavery drama 12 Years a Slave and the crime comedy American Hustle are tied for second with ten nominations each and are also competing in the coveted Best Film category along with the fact-based thriller Captain Phillips and the British comedy-drama Philomena.
Once again, 12 Years a Slave scored a hat-trick of acting noms for its cast, with British performer Chiwetel Ejiofor in contention for Leading Actor while co-stars Michael Fassbender and newcomer Lupita Nyong’o are up the supporting gongs.
As with the Golden Globes, American Hustle receives acting mentions for all four of its principal cast, with Christian Bale and Amy Adams nodded in the lead categories, while co-stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are both shortlisted in supporting.
Additionally, edgy filmmaker David O. Russell receives double nominations for his writing and directing on the 70s-based caper.
Elsewhere, British stars Dame Judi Dench (Philomena) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) compete in the Leading Actress field alongside Oscar favourite Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) while Hollywood superstars Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) and veteran Bruce Dern (Nebraska) go head-to-head in Leading Actor.
Matt Damon receives a surprise Supporting Actor nod for his role in the HBO television film Behind the Candelabra, and is joined in that category by fellow first-timers Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) and Daniel Brühl (Rush).
Meanwhile, British star Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) is included in the Best Supporting Actress line-up alongside Hollywood heavyweights Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and Oprah Winfrey (The Butler).
The Outstanding British Film category features a six-strong line-up consisting of Gravity and Philomena as well as factual dramas Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Rush, Saving Mr Banks and the independent flick The Selfish Giant.
Elsewhere, the controversial Palme d’Or winning drama Blue is the Warmest Colour is up for Best Film Not in the English Language, while Disney duo Frozen and Monsters University compete against Despicable Me 2 in the Best Animated Film category.
As previously announced, the EE Rising Star award includes French starlet Léa Seydoux and British duo George MacKay and Will Poulter.
Despite being eligible for BAFTA recognition, the factual drama Dallas Buyers Club was completely ignored by the British Academy, with stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both overlooked.
Other high-profile films to be omitted included Cloud Atlas, Her, Man of Steel and Prisoners, while renowned actors like Steve Coogan (Philomena), Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Colour), Naomie Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Robert Redford (All is Lost), June Squibb (Nebraska), Meryl Streep (August: Osage County), and Forest Whitaker (The Butler) were also snubbed.
The EE BAFTAs will take place at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden on Sunday 16 February, with veteran entertainer Stephen Fry back as host for a ninth time.
