Having launched his illustrious film career nearly twenty years ago with his role as Captain Steve Hiller in the sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day, Will Smith will NOT be reprising the role in the film’s long-awaited sequel.
The film’s director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow, 2012) confirmed the news to NY Daily News that Oscar-nominee Smith (Men in Black trilogy, Ali) was too expensive to bring back.
“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive. But he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much.”
However he has revealed that other original stars like Jeff Goldblum (The Fly, Jurassic Park) and Bill Pullman (Spaceballs, While You Were Sleeping) could return as their characters are in the script for the follow-up to the 1996 hit.
“We have like half of the people that you would know from the first film. The other half are people who are new.”
ID Forever, Part I will be set twenty years after the events of the original film with the aliens looking to get revenge on the human race for what occurred in their previous stint on Earth.
The film is set for release on July 3rd 2015.
