The Star Wars saga returns with a new adventure as good and evil go head-to-head in official trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

With two months to go until Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released in cinemas, a lot of fans have been waiting an awful long time for the film’s official trailer to appear online.

The much-anticipated seventh outing of the iconic sci-fi franchise has already revealed two teasers in almost a year though neither have particularly revealed what the story is about.

That has been down to director JJ Abrams (Super 8, Star Trek) and producer Kathleen Kennedy’s key decision in trying to keep the film’s narrative a secret without spoilers being leaked.

However the new full-length preview has finally premiered online and thus confirmed more about the plot as well as the role of specific characters.

Set for a running time of over two hours, the reported synopsis sees British newcomer John Boyega (Attack the Block, 24: Live Another Day) play Finn, a stormtrooper who abandons his role whilst on the desert planet of Jakku. Along the way, he encounters female scavenger Rey who is portrayed by fellow British newbie Daisy Ridley (Silent Witness).

Together the pair embark on an epic quest to track down the great Jedi knight Luke Skywalker (played once again by Mark Hamill) with the help of old characters Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). Meanwhile evil threatens to return to the galaxy in the form of the New Order which is led by the sinister Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver (Lincoln, Girls) as they do battle with the heroic Resistance.

The rest of the support cast from includes Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davies, A Most Violent Year) as Resistance pilot Cameron Poe, Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Non-Stop) as alien Maz Kanata, Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong) as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domnhall Gleeson (About Time, Unbroken) as General Hux and Gwendoline Christie (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Game of Thrones) as Captain Phasma.

Franchise actors Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Kenny Baker (R2-D2) are also back for the new installment with Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Star Trek) and Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist, Flash Gordon) both cast in unspecified roles.

As was the case with the other six films in the series, the sequel is being scored by the legendary composer John Williams (Jaws, Indiana Jones series, E.T: The Extra Terrestrial) whose stirring Rebel Fleet music is used in the preview.

The long wait for fans will finally be over when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits cinemas worldwide on December 18th.
