For fans of James Cameron’s Avatar, it’s been a lengthy eight years since we were taken into the spectacular world of Pandora.
Since then, Cameron has taken his time with making the first of FOUR sequels to the 2009 sci-fi blockbuster which currently remains the highest grossing film in cinematic history.
However the Oscar-winning director of Aliens (1986) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) has managed to convince one of his former heavyweight stars to join the Avatar universe in the form of British actress Kate Winslet.
The prolific star of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), The Reader (2008) and Steve Jobs (2015) is reuniting with Cameron TWENTY years after their work on the Oscar-winning disaster epic Titanic (1997).
Cameron confirmed the news earlier today with the only official details of the character being that her name is Ronal.
“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career.
“I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”
Winslet is the high-profile addition to Avatar 2 with other newcomers to the franchise including Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones, Taboo), Cliff Curtis (Sunshine, Fear the Walking Dead) and Jamie Flatters (So Awkward, Liar).
Returning cast members from the original hit include Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri), Joel David Moore (Norm Spellman) and CCH Pounder (Moat). Bizarrely, Sigourney Weaver (Dr. Grace Augustine) and Stephen Lang (Miles Quaritch) are also back despite their characters being killed off previously.
Avatar 2 is scheduled for release on December 18th 2020 with the final three outings released on December 17th 2021, December 20th 2024 and December 19th 2025 respectively.
