For many people, Winston Churchill is highly regarded as one of the greatest figures in British history.
The stern politician and war leader has been immortalised on screen by some talented actors in recent years including Albert Finney (Into the Storm), Timothy Spall (The King’s Speech) and John Lithgow (The Crown).
Coincidentally, two biopics have been made about the former Prime Minister this year with the first of those being Churchill, which starred Brian Cox in the lead role. However the second of these biopics is now on its way with renowned British actor Gary Oldman (Leon: The Professional, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Dark Knight trilogy) unrecognisable in his portrayal of Churchill.
Entitled Darkest Hour, the film’s official trailer can be seen below:
Directed by Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement), the biopic focuses on Churchill’s appointment as Prime Minister of Great Britain and his difficult call in trying to prevent a war taking place with Nazi Germany. But with the threat of an invasion imminent, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
Oldman is joined in the film by a solid support cast which includes Kristen Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Nowhere Boy) as Clementine Churchill, Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver) as Churchill’s secretary Elizabeth Nel, Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as King George VI, Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones, The Tunnel) as Viscount Halifax and Ronald Pickup (The Mission, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) as Neville Chamberlain.
Darkest Hour will be released in the UK on January 12th 2018.
