Back in 1997, James Cameron achieved almighty success with his multi-Oscar winning epic Titanic which became the highest grossing film of all time. Remarkably, his next film Avatar (2009) broke that record and held onto the title for almost a decade.
But now, Cameron has been dethroned from being “king of the world” following the monumental achievement of the most recent Marvel Studios outing; Avengers: Endgame. The concluding chapter to Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally overtaken Avatar’s previous record of $2,789.7bn with its recent re-release playing a key part.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige hailed the achievement at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday while Disney boss Alan Horn posted a statement saying:
“Huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights.”
Endgame already had other achievements prior to this one as it produced the biggest global opening all time at $1.22bn when it was released in April, breaking the record of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.
Congratulations Endgame, here’s hoping you retain this record for (I Love You) 3000 years to come!
