Last year, Matt Damon played a character who was trapped on a deserted planet and ended up being rescued (with rather dangerous results!) in Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar.
The Oscar-winning star of The Bourne trilogy and The Departed is now set for another tough ordeal in space as he and a star-studded cast feature in the upcoming drama The Martian.
The genre is once again tackled by veteran director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) with the film’s official trailer being released earlier today.
Based on the 2011 novel by Andy Weir, the story sees astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) embark on a manned mission to Mars which ends with him being presumed dead and left behind by his crew after a fierce storm hits the planet. However after surviving, he takes advantage of limited supplies and tries to send a signal back to Earth. Upon retrieving the information, his crew-mates vow to return to Mars in order to rescue him.
Coincidentally, Damon is not the only eyecatching actor returning to the sci-fi genre as his Interstellar co-star Jessica Chastain (The Help, Zero Dark Thirty) provides exceptional support as the senior member of Watney’s crew.
The rest of the all-star cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men, 12 Years a Slave), Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber, The Newsroom), Kate Mara (House of Cards, Fantastic Four), Michael Pena (Crash, End of Watch), Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) and Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Game of Thrones).
The Martian will be released in the UK on November 27th.
