2026 TV BAFTA nominations: Adolescence leads the field with eleven nods

The recognition keeps on coming for Netflix’s Adolescence after the acclaimed miniseries dominated this year’s BAFTA Television Awards nominations with an impressive eleven.

The crime drama, which explores the arrest and conviction of a teenage boy accused of a terrible crime, contests the Limited Drama category, while five of its ensemble cast are acknowledged in the acting fields.

As expected, central star and co-creator Stephen Graham is shortlisted in a strong Leading Actor field for his performance as devastated father Eddie Miller, and is also recognised for his producing and writing as he seeks to end his long wait for a maiden BAFTA success.

Additionally, multi-award-winning newcomer Owen Cooper will look to add another accolade to his growing trophy collection after landing a Supporting Actor nod for his life-changing role as teenage killer Jamie Miller.

Co-star Ashley Walters is also acknowledged in the Supporting Actor category for his turn as DI Luke Bascombe, while fellow cast members Erin Doherty and Christine Tremarco are both in contention for the Supporting Actress gong for their respective performances as Briony Ariston and Manda Miller.

Coincidentally, Doherty is also shortlisted in the Leading Actress category for her turn as London thief Mary Carr in the Disney+ historical drama A Thousand Blows, which garnered a healthy seven nominations including Best Drama Series.

BBC crime dramas Blue Lights and This City is Ours are among those looking to challenge for the Drama Series prize, while ITV’s I Fought the Law, Channel 4’s Trespasses and BBC Three’s What It Feels Like for a Girl face an uphill task in trying to overcome Adolescence in the Limited Drama field.

In the acting categories, Aimee Lou Wood earns double acting nods for her roles as agoraphobic film enthusiast Evie in BBC Three’s Film Club and as ill-fated hotel guest Chelsea in the latest series of HBO’s The White Lotus.

Meanwhile, Jodie Whittaker finally lands a first BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of crusading mother Susan McIntyre in Netflix’s Toxic Town with Sheridan Smith (I Fought the Law) among her rival nominees in the Leading Actress line-up.

In contrast, the Leading Actor category sees the aforementioned Stephen Graham is joined in a competitive field by fellow Liverpudlian stars Ellis Howard and James Nelson-Joyce who are acknowledged for their respective performances in What It Feels Like for a Girl and This City is Ours.

On the comedy front, the Motherland spin-off Amandaland garnered multiple mentions including a hat-trick of acting nods for cast members Lucy Punch, Philippa Dunne and Jennifer Saunders.

Additionally, the feminist comedy also earns a place on the Scripted Comedy shortlist where it competes against fellow BBC sitcoms How are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) and Things You Should Have Done and the final series of Channel 4’s Big Boys.

Once again, Steve Coogan lands another (Male) Comedy Performance nod for his iconic role as inept presenter Alan Partridge, and is joined by fellow category winners Mawaan Rizwan (Juice) and Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?).

Meanwhile, there are a host of first-time acting nominees including Rose Ayling-Ellis (Reunion), Siân Brooke (Blue Lights), Emilia Jones (Task), Rafael Mathé (The Death of Bunny Munro), Joshua McGuire (The Gold), and Narges Rashidi (Prisoner 951), while Paddy Considine (MobLand), Taron Egerton (Smoke) Colin Firth (Lockerbie: A Search for Truth), Rosie Jones (Pushers), Katherine Parkinson (Here We Go), Jon Pointing (Big Boys) and Matt Smith (The Death of Bunny Munro) are among those with previous BAFTA mentions.

Elsewhere, the popular reality series The Celebrity Traitors is up for a number of key awards including Best Reality while presenter Claudia Winkleman contests the Best Entertainment Performance line-up with the likes of Alan Carr, Amanda Holden, Bob Mortimer, and double nominee Romesh Ranganathan.

The International category sees the multi-award-winning satire The Studio face off against fellow Apple TV programmes Pluribus and Severance while BBC duo Casualty and EastEnders are shortlisted in the Soap category with ITV’s Coronation Street.

The rest of the high-profile television programmes in contention for BAFTA recognition include The Bear, The Chase, The Diplomat, Educating Yorkshire, The Graham Norton Show, Grenfell: Uncovered, Last One Laughing, Lorraine, One Day in Southport, Race Across the World, Richard Osman’s House of Games, Squid Game: The Challenge, Unforgotten: The Bradford City Fire and Would I Lie to You?.

As previously announced last week, the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment award will be contested by highlighted scenes from the best of television in 2025 including Jamie’s outburst at the psychologist in Adolescence, Alan Carr’s victory in The Celebrity Traitors, and Bob Mortimer and Richard Ayoade’s speed date from Last One Laughing.

The 2026 BAFTA Television Awards will take place at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 10 May, with comedian and actor Greg Davies on hosting duties for the first time.
