The nominations for this year’s BAFTA Television Awards have been announced, with BBC One duo The Responder and This is Going to Hurt leading the way with six nods apiece.
The Responder, which follows a troubled Liverpudlian police officer, is on the shortlist for Best Drama Series, alongside Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters, Channel 4’s Somewhere Boy and fellow BBC crime drama Sherwood.
Additionally, central star Martin Freeman is among the big-names acknowledged in a strong Leading Actor line-up, while co-stars Adelayo Adedayo and Wirral newcomer Josh Finan are both recognised in the Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor categories.
Despite missing out on a Drama Series nod, Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, and the fifth series of Netflix’s The Crown also enjoyed a solid showing with five nods each.
In the case of This is Going to Hurt, the television adaptation of Adam Kay’s bestselling memoir about his time as a junior doctor is up for the Best Mini-Series prize, while renowned star Ben Whishaw earns a Leading Actor nomination for his fictionalised portrayal of Kay.
However, co-star Ambika Mod was shockingly overlooked for her performance as ill-fated nurse Dr. Shruti Acharya.
Meanwhile, BBC Three’s Mood contests the Mini-Series category alongside ITV duo A Spy Among Friends and The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, while Channel 4’s I Am…Ruth, Netflix’s The House and BBC Three’s Life and Death in the Warehouse lock horns in the Single Drama field.
In the acting categories, previous film winners Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Kate Winslet (I Am Ruth) go head-to-head in a powerhouse Leading Actress line-up that includes Maxine Peake (Anne) and Billie Piper (I Hate Suzie Too).
As for Leading Actor, Gary Oldman receives his first acting nomination in television for his performance as scruffy MI5 boss Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses, while Cillian Murphy finally scores a first BAFTA nod for his lauded role as gangster Tommy Shelby in the final series of BBC One’s Peaky Blinders.
Previous BAFTA winners Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood), Sarah Lancashire (Julia), Vicky McClure (Without Sin), Fiona Shaw (Andor), and Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) are also recognised while the other acting nominees include Samuel Bottomley (Somewhere Boy), Salim Daw (The Crown), Anne-Marie Duff (Bad Sisters), Taron Egerton (Black Bird), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Lesley Manville (Sherwood), Chaske Spencer (The English), and Top Boy starlets Saffron Hocking and Jasmine Jobson.
On the comedy front, BBC One’s Am I Being Unreasonable? and Channel 4’s Big Boys are on top with four nods each, which includes a place on the Scripted Comedy shortlist.
Both sitcoms are joined in the main category by BBC One’s Ghosts, and the final series of Channel 4’s beloved Irish sitcom Derry Girls.
From those comedies, Am I Being Unreasonable? stars Daisy May Cooper and teenage newcomer Lenny Rush are both acknowledged in the acting categories, along with Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls) and Jon Pointing (Big Boys).
Former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe earns a Male Comedy Performance nod for his portrayal of comedian “Weird Al” Yankovic in the autobiographical Roku Channel programme Weird: The Al Yankovic Story with Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Joseph Gilgun (Brassic) and Stephen Merchant (The Outlaws) among his fellow nominees.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Female Comedy Performance category is made up by Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth) and first-time BAFTA inductees Taj Atwal (Hullraisers), Lucy Beaumont (Meet the Richardsons) and Natasia Demetriou (What We Do in the Shadows).
Elsewhere, BBC duo Casualty and EastEnders go up against ITV’s Emmerdale in the Soap & Continuing Drama field, while the contenders for the International award include FX+’s The Bear, HBO’s The White Lotus and Netflix duo Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Wednesday.
After making a splash with audiences, BBC One’s hit reality series The Traitors picks up two nominations for Reality & Constructed Factual, and an Entertainment Performance nod for host Claudia Winkleman.
Her competition in that bracket includes disabled comedian Rosie Jones (Rosie Jones’ Trip Hazard) and previous category winners Mo Gilligan (The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan) and Big Zuu (Big Zuu’s Big Eats).
Meanwhile, the late Queen Elizabeth II is recognised twice in the Live Event category for both her Platinum Jubilee last June, and her state funeral in September.
A number of acclaimed documentaries are all in contention for BAFTA honours including AIDS: The Unheard Tapes, Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes, Jeremy Kyle Show: Death on Daytime, Our Falklands War: A Frontline Story, The Real Mo Farah and Worlds Collide: The Manchester Bombing.
Additionally, recognisable programmes like Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, The Chase, Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams, The Masked Singer, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, and Strictly Come Dancing are also name-checked by the nominating committee.
Meanwhile, the contenders for this year’s most memorable television moment are set to be announced on 18 April, with P&O Cruises replacing Virgin TV as the new category sponsor.
Finally, comedian duo Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan will share hosting duties for this year’s BAFTA Television Awards ceremony, which will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 14 May.
