After making her impressive big-screen debut as Mattie Ross in the Coen Bros western True Grit back in 2010, Oscar-nominated youngster Hailee Steinfeld has blossomed into a beautiful young woman who looks destined for Hollywood royalty.

Based on William Shakespeare’s iconic play and penned by Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes, the film focuses on the star-crossed lovers Romeo (Douglas Booth from Great Expectations and LOL) and Juliet (Steinfeld) as they defy the war between their families only for their romance to end in devastating circumstances.

The two young actors are backed by a strong supporting cast including Damian Lewis (Homeland), Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Cinderella Man), Stellan Skarsgård (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Thor), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, Paranorman) and Lesley Manville (Topsy-Turvey, Another Year) with Italian director Carlo Carlei behind the camera.

Previous film adaptations of Romeo and Juliet have included Franco Zefferelli’s version from 1968 and the well-known Baz Luhrmann film from 1996 which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

The newest take on the tragic classic is due out in UK cinemas on July 26th.
