Lonely actor Brendan Fraser is hired to play stand-in roles in other people’s lives in Rental Family trailer

A heartwarming trailer has landed for Rental Family.

The upcoming comedy-drama has already generated positive buzz ahead of its world premiere at next month’s Toronto Film Festival.

Directed and co-written by Hikari (37 Seconds, Beef), the story follows a lonely actor based in Tokyo who starts working for a Japanese “rental family” company to play stand-in roles in other people’s lives. Along the way, he finds surprising connections and unexpected joys within his built-in family.

Fresh from his Oscar-winning success in The Whale (2022), Brendan Fraser leads the film’s cast and is joined by Takehiro Hira (Giri/Haji, Shōgun), Mari Yamamoto (Pachinko, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), and Akira Emoto (Dr. Akagi, Shin Godzilla).

Touted as a sleeper Oscar contender, Rental Family will arrive in UK cinemas on 9 January 2026.
