2019 TV BAFTA nominations: Killing Eve and A Very English Scandal rack up most nods

The nominations for the 65th BAFTA Television Awards have finally been unveiled.

BBC One’s Killing Eve reigns supreme with a mighty fourteen nods and in doing so, breaks the record for the most BAFTA noms received in a single year.

The spy thriller, which centres on an MI6 intelligence officer and her pursuit of a psychopathic assassin, is up for five major accolades as well as a further nine Craft Awards.

Star actresses Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are both shortlisted together in the Leading Actress category for their respective performances as Eve Polastri and Villanelle, while co-stars Fiona Shaw and Kim Bodnia are nominated for their supporting roles.

Adapted from the hit novel series by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve is also in contention for the Drama Series prize where it faces stern competition from fellow BBC One dramas Bodyguard and Informer, as well as Sky Atlantic’s Save Me.

In the case of Bodyguard, the political thriller also secured a Leading Actress nod for Keeley Hawes as ill-fated prime minister Julia Montague, though Richard Madden was surprisingly snubbed by BAFTA despite winning a Golden Globe for his role as PTSD-suffering police sergeant David Budd.

Coincidentally, Hawes also receives a Supporting Actress nod for her role in the BBC One drama Mrs. Wilson, while co-star Ruth Wilson completes the Leading Actress line-up for playing her own grandmother.

Elsewhere, BBC One’s A Very English Scandal scored the second most BAFTA nods with twelve, including four in the major categories.

The fact-based drama, which dramatises the Thorpe Affair, also received a hat-trick of acting noms for its cast, with Hugh Grant earning his first television nod for his portrayal of politician Jeremy Thorpe.

After Golden Globe success back in January, Ben Whishaw is targeting another Supporting Actor win for his turn as Norman Scott, while Monica Dolan receives a Supporting Actress mention for playing Marion Thorpe.

Additionally, A Very English Scandal is also up for the Miniseries prize where it competes against Channel 4’s Kiri, Sky Atlantic’s Patrick Melrose and the aforementioned Mrs. Wilson.

Benedict Cumberbatch is looking to finally end his long wait for a maiden BAFTA win after securing a Leading Actor nom for his performance in Patrick Melrose and is joined in the category by first-time nominees Lucian Msamati (Kiri) and Chance Perdomo (Killed by My Debt).

Meanwhile, former singer-turned-actress Billie Piper receives her first BAFTA nod for her supporting turn in the BBC One thriller Collateral while Stephen Graham and Alex Jennings contest the Supporting Actor line-up for their respective roles in Save Me, and ITV’s Unforgotten.

The Single Drama category sees the Bandersnatch episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror lock horns against BBC duo Care and Killed by My Debt, and Channel 4’s Through the Gates.

On the funny side of things, Channel 4 sitcoms Derry Girls and Stath Lets Flats are in contention for the Scripted Comedy accolade, where they face competition from BBC Two’s Mum and Sky Atlantic’s Sally4Ever.

Though This Country surprisingly missed out on a Scripted Comedy nod, star and co-creator Daisy May Cooper is back to defend her Female Comedy Performance crown against versatile nominees Julia Davis (Sally4ever), Jessica Hynes (There She Goes), and Lesley Manville (Mum).

Meanwhile, the Male Comedy Performance line-up sees Jamie Demetriou acknowledged for his role in Stath Lets Flats, with competition coming from seasoned contenders Alex Macqueen (Sally4ever), Peter Mullan (Mum), and Steve Pemberton (Inside No. 9).

Elsewhere, BBC One duo Casualty and EastEnders go head-to-head in the Soap & Continuing Drama category, while the International field includes Hulu’s dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale, and HBO’s family saga Succession.

Additionally, ITV’s Good Morning Britain receives its first BAFTA nominations in the News Coverage bracket for their special on knife crime and their exclusive interview with Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas.

The other notable programmes in contention for television honours include Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent, Dragons’ Den, Gordon, Gino and Fred’s Road Trip, The Great British Bake Off, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, The Last Leg, A League of Their Own, Louis Theroux’s Altered States, Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, Strictly Come Dancing, and Who Do You Think You Are?.

Finally, the Virgin TV’s Must-See Moments category is contested by the most talked-about television scenes of 2018 including Julia Montague’s assassination in Bodyguard, Gail’s monologue on the suicide of Aidan Connor in Coronation Street, Eve’s stabbing of Villanelle in Killing Eve, and the finale from Peter Kay’s Car Share.

The 65th BAFTA Television Awards will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 12 May, with Graham Norton back as host after a two-year hiatus.
