2014 TV BAFTA nominations: Broadchurch and The IT Crowd top major contenders

The nominations for the 60th BAFTA Television Awards have been revealed.

After keeping audiences gripped throughout its six captivating episodes, the ITV crime drama Broadchurch leads the way with eight nods, including two for cast members Olivia Colman and David Bradley.

Having won two BAFTAs in drama and comedy last year, Colman will be targetting a hat-trick of wins for her powerful performance as DS Miller in Leading Actress, while Bradley is shortlisted in the Supporting Actor field. Bizarrely, co-star David Tennant missed out on a Leading Actor nom despite stellar praise for his role as DI Alec Hardy.

Broadchurch also competes in a Drama Series line-up that is contested by the E4 dramedy My Mad Fat Diary and BBC duo Top of the Lake and The Village.

Despite picking up multiple nominations in the technical fields, the hit BBC gangster drama Peaky Blinders was completely ignored in the major categories!

The crime theme continues to dominate elsewhere as BBC’s The Fall faces off against the Channel 4 drama Southcliffe in the Miniseries line-up.

For their deadly roles in The Fall and Southcliffe respectively, male stars Jamie Dornan and Sean Harris go head-to-head in Leading Actor alongside last year’s winner Dominic West, who is acknowledged for his portrayal of celebrated actor Richard Burton in the factual drama Burton & Taylor.

Co-star Helena Bonham Carter is also recognised for her portrayal of fellow acting great Elizabeth Taylor in Leading Actress, with her category completed by Maxine Peake (The Village) and Liverpudlian newcomer Kerrie Hayes (The Mill).

Meanwhile, Last Tango in Halifax co-stars Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker go head-to-head in the Supporting Actress line-up alongside Shirley Henderson (Southcliffe) and Claire Rushbrook (My Mad Fat Diary).

Over in the comedy fields, the swansong series of Channel 4’s hit sitcom The IT Crowd receives four major noms with the final episode in contention for the coveted Scripted Comedy prize alongside Count Arthur Strong, Him & Her: The Wedding and Toast of London.

Additionally, male stars Richard Ayoade and Chris O’Dowd go head-to-head in the Male Comedy Performance line-up for their roles as hapless computer nerds Maurice and Roy, while co-star Katherine Parkinson is acknowledged in Female Comedy Performance for playing Jen.

The other high-profile actors to receive BAFTA love are Jerome Flynn (Ripper Street), Rory Kinnear (Southcliffe), Frances de la Tour (Vicious), Kerry Howard (Him & Her: The Wedding), Matthew Baynton (The Wrong Mans), and James Corden (The Wrong Mans).

Elsewhere, the final series of Breaking Bad is up for two awards, including the International gong while multiple programmes are in contention for honours including An Adventure in Space and Time, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Coronation Street, David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive, Doctor Who: Day of the Doctor, EastEnders, Educating Yorkshire, Gogglebox, The Great British Bake Off, A League of Their Own and Strictly Come Dancing.

This year’s ceremony will take place at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, London on Sunday 18 May with Graham Norton on hosting duties again.

Coincidentally, the Irish presenter also has the extra advantage of being recognised for the Entertainment Performance category!
