2021 Oscar nominations: Mank takes pole position with ten nods

Two months later than planned, the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards are finally here!

The factual drama Mank leads this year’s race with a hefty ten mentions, including a place on the lucrative Best Picture shortlist.

The film, which focuses on screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his development of the screenplay for the 1941 film Citizen Kane, also scored a Best Director nod for auteur David Fincher, though his late father Jack misses out on a posthumous Screenplay nom.

Additionally, British veteran Gary Oldman earns another Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Mankiewicz, while co-star Amanda Seyfried (as Marion Davies) is up for Best Supporting Actress.

Six films are tied for second-place in the nominations tally, with the drama Nomadland the current frontrunner to take home the Best Picture Oscar

Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao is up for three awards, including Best Director and is heavily tipped to become only the second woman to win the category, while leading star Frances McDormand (as Fern) is seeking to become only the second actress in Oscars history to win three Best Actress gongs.

A further five Best Picture nominees have also racked up six noms in total; the drama The Father, the family drama Minari, the music-based drama Sound of Metal, and factual dramas Judas and the Black Messiah, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

The final film to complete the prestigious list is the provocative thriller Promising Young Woman, which scored a Best Actress nod for British star Carey Mulligan (as Cassie Thomas) and writing and directing noms for filmmaker Emerald Fennell.

In a historic first, the Fennell and Zhao mentions mark the first time that two women have been shortlisted for the Best Director accolade.

The rest of the category is filled by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and shock nominee Thomas Vinterberg for the Danish drama Another Round.

In the acting categories, the aforementioned McDormand and Mulligan contest a strong Best Actress line-up that features Viola Davis (as Ma Rainey) in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Vanessa Kirby (as Martha Weiss) in Pieces of a Woman and Golden Globe victor Andra Day (as Billie Holiday) in The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

After his tragic death last August, the late Chadwick Boseman receives a posthumous Best Actor nomination for his swansong turn as trumpet player Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The rest of the stellar Best Actor line-up is rounded off by previous category winner Sir Anthony Hopkins (as Anthony) in The Father, Riz Ahmed (as Ruben Stone) in Sound of Metal and Steven Yeun (as Jacob Yi) in Minari.

In the supporting line-ups, Glenn Close is looking to finally end her long wait for a first Oscar success with her eighth nod as grandmother Bonnie “Mamaw” Vance in the critically-maligned drama Hillbilly Elegy.

Her competition includes former adversary Olivia Colman (as Anne) in The Father and veteran Korean actress Yuh-jung Youn (as Soonja) in Minari.

The category is completed by Bulgarian starlet Maria Bakalova who pulls off a famous nod for her praised turn as bride-to-be Tutar Sagdiyev in the mockumentary sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Bakalova’s co-star Sacha Baron Cohen receives two mentions by the Academy, including another Best Adapted Screenplay nod for the Borat follow-up.

Additionally, the British comedian earns a Best Supporting Actor nom for his performance as real-life activist Abby Hoffman in The Trial of the Chicago 7.

However, he faces stern competition in his category from Judas and the Black Messiah pair Daniel Kaluuya (as Fred Hampton) and LaKeith Stanfield (as William O’Neal), as well as Leslie Odom Jr. (as Sam Cooke) in One Night in Miami… and veteran newcomer Paul Raci (as Joe) in Sound of Metal.

Elsewhere, Pixar’s Soul is the heavy favourite to land Best Animated Film and faces resilience from Pixar rival Onward and the Aardman animated sequel A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.

Meanwhile, Another Round will look to challenge for the Best International Feature prize with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Quo Vadis, Aida? among its category rivals.

Other notable films to receive Oscar mentions include Da 5 Bloods, Emma., Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, The Midnight Sky, Mulan, News of the World, Pinocchio, Tenet and The White Tiger.

Compared to recent Oscar seasons, there weren’t too many shocks, barring a surprise Best Director snub for Aaron Sorkin and his work on The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Despite their recent Golden Globe victories, both Jodie Foster and Rosamund Pike were overlooked for their performances in The Mauritanian and I Care a Lot.

Additionally, films that failed to land a single nomination included First Cow, Ammonite, Birds of Prey, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, The Invisible Man, The Little Things, The Prom and Welcome to Chechnya.

Owing to the current restrictions, the 93rd Academy Awards will take place at both Los Angeles’s Union Station and the Dolby Theatre on 25 April.
