2025 TV BAFTA nominations: Baby Reindeer and Mr Bates vs the Post Office top leaderboard

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer has continued its remarkable run of success throughout awards season after scoring multiple nominations at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards.

Based on the real-life experiences of Scottish comedian and creator Richard Gadd, the controversial miniseries is up for eight awards, including the prestigious Best Limited Drama accolade.

For his performance as troubled comic Donny Dunn, Gadd contests a strong Leading Actor category and also finds himself up for his writing and producing.

Once again, Jessica Gunning earns a Supporting Actress nod for her career-defining role as stalker Martha Hunt and will look to add a BAFTA to her trophy collection after landing an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award in recent months.

Among those standing in Gunning’s way for the prize is co-star Nava Mau who is recognised for her turn as Donny’s trans lover Teri.

However, Baby Reindeer faces supreme competition from the lauded ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office, which is in contention for six accolades.

The series, which explores the British Post Office scandal, is up for Best Limited Drama, while central stars Toby Jones and Monica Dolan contest the lead categories for their respective portrayals of campaigners Alan Bates and Jo Hamilton.

Both Baby Reindeer and Mr Bates vs. the Post Office are joined in the Limited Drama field by BBC One’s Lost Boys and Fairies, and Netflix’s television adaptation of One Day.

Elsewhere, BBC trio Blue Lights, Sherwood, and Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light face off in a competitive Best Drama Series line-up that is completed by Netflix’s Supacell.

Despite missing out on a place on the shortlist, the scandalous Disney+ drama Rivals garnered multiple nominations, including a Leading Actor nod for David Tennant and a Supporting Actress mention for Katherine Parkinson.

In the leading categories, Anna Maxwell Martin will be targeting a third Leading Actress win after being nominated for her powerful portrayal of victimised nurse Delia Balmer in ITV’s Until I Kill You.

Her stellar competition in that field includes Marisa Abela (Industry), Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing) and Billie Piper (Scoop).

Meanwhile, the BBC One drama Mr Loverman garnered a hat-trick of acting nods for its cast, with Lennie James and Sharon D Clarke both in contention for leading honours while co-star Ariyon Bakhare is up for Best Supporting Actor.

In the case of James, he competes in a powerhouse Leading Actor category that is rounded off by Martin Freeman (The Responder) and Gary Oldman (Slow Horses).

On the humour front, BBC duo Alma’s Not Normal and Ludwig are both shortlisted for the Scripted Comedy accolade where they are joined by Sky One’s Brassic and, more surprisingly, ITV’s G’wed.

In a career spanning multiple decades, Sir Jonathan Pryce earns a maiden BAFTA television nod for his supporting turn in Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, while Leading Actress contender Monica Dolan is also up for Supporting Actress for her sinister turn as criminal Ann Branson in Sherwood.

In terms of the other acting nominees, there are returning mentions for the likes of Sue Johnston (Truelove), Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey: The Finale), Damian Lewis (Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light), Maxine Peake (Say Nothing), Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts) and Sophie Willan (Alma’s Not Normal).

Despite missing out on a Supporting Actor nod for Rivals, Danny Dyer lands his first BAFTA nod for his role in Sky One’s Mr. Bigstuff and is joined by other first-time nominees including Lolly Adefope (The Franchise), McKinley Belcher III (Eric), Christopher Chung (Slow Horses), Nicola Coughlan (Big Mood), Phil Dunning (Smoggie Queens), Bilal Hasna (Extraordinary), Kate O’Flynn (Everyone Else Burns), Nabhaan Rizwan (Kaos), Oliver Savell (Changing Ends), Dylan Thomas Smith (G’wed) and Sonny Walker (The Gathering).

Elsewhere, Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway), Claudia Winkleman (The Traitors) and Stacey Solomon (Sort Your Life Out) are among the nominees for Best Entertainment Performance while the multi-award-winning FX series Shōgun contests the International category alongside the likes of Colin from Accounts, Say Nothing and True Detective: Night Country.

The rest of the notable television programmes in contention for BAFTA recognition are Atomic People, Casualty, Dragons’ Den, EastEnders, Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour, Hell Jumper, Horrible Histories, Loose Women, The Push: Murder on the Cliff, Race Across the World, Taskmaster, and The Traitors.

As previously announced, this year’s P&O Cruises Memorable Moment award will be contested by highlighted scenes from various programmes across 2024 including Smithy’s fateful conversation with Mick in Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, the game of naked tennis in Rivals, and Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell’s waltz to ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in Strictly Come Dancing.

This year’s television awards will be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 11 May, with Scottish actor and presenter Alan Cumming taking on the role of presenter.
