2025 Golden Globe (film) nominations: Emilia Pérez scores formidable total of ten

With awards season well and truly underway for 2024/25, the Golden Globes have unveiled their slate of nominations celebrating the best of film and television throughout this past year.

In the cinematic categories, the daring crime musical Emilia Pérez is the standout tally leader with a mammoth ten nods and finds itself on the shortlists for both Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) and Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language).

The critically-diverse Spanish-language film, which centres on a Mexican cartel leader and their outlandish plan to retire and transition into living as a woman, also scored three mentions for its cast with Karla Sofía Gascón making Globes history as the first transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress (Comedy or Musical).

Additionally, co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña lock horns in the Best Supporting Actress category, while filmmaker Jacques Audiard and French musicians Clément Ducol and Camille earn multiple mentions across the directing, writing and music fields.

This mighty haul for the Netflix feature makes it the most nominated comedy or musical film in Golden Globe history and breaks a record previously held by both Cabaret (1972), and last year’s Barbie.

However, Emilia Pérez faces some mighty competition in the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) line-up from other potential Oscar contenders, including the Palme d’Or-winning romantic comedy Anora and the satirical horror The Substance with five nominations each.

From those films, auteurs Sean Baker and Coralie Fargeat receive double nods for their writing and directing, while rising starlet Mikey Madison and Hollywood veteran Demi Moore go head-to-head for the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) prize.

The big-screen adaptation of the hit musical Wicked also earns a Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) mention and is joined by the tennis-based romantic comedy Challengers, and the indie dramedy A Real Pain.

For Wicked, the current box-office phenomenon also garnered acting nods for British star Cynthia Erivo in Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and musician Ariana Grande in Best Supporting Actress, while the film’s final mention comes in the Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement category.

Meanwhile, Jesse Eisenberg earns double noms for writing and starring in A Real Pain and faces stern competition in the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) line-up from the likes of British performer Hugh Grant (Heretic) and Glen Powell (Hit Man).

On the drama front, the post-war epic The Brutalist and the papal thriller Conclave are out in front with a combined thirteen nominations, including a place on the Best Picture (Drama) shortlist.

The Brutalist, which follows a Hungarian architect and his attempt to build a new life for himself in America after World War II, garnered a hat-trick of nods for its cast with leading man Adrien Brody up for Best Actor (Drama), while co-stars Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones are acknowledged in the supporting brackets.

In the case of Conclave, British thespian Ralph Fiennes contests the Best Actor (Drama) category for his role as a cardinal seeking to elect the new Pope, with seasoned co-star Isabella Rossellini landing a Best Supporting Actress nod.

Meanwhile, the music-based factual drama A Complete Unknown scored a crucial mention for Best Motion Picture (Drama), while prolific star Timothée Chalamet earns a Best Actor (Drama) nom for his portrayal of celebrated musician Bob Dylan.

The rest of the Best Motion Picture (Drama) line-up is completed by the blockbuster sequel Dune: Part Two, the race-relations drama Nickel Boys, and the factual drama September 5.

It was also a day to remember for Sebastian Stan, as he scored double nominations for his performances as a facially disfigured actor in the dark comedy A Different Man, and for his daring turn as returning US President Donald Trump in the autobiographical drama The Apprentice.

In the Best Actress (Drama) field, former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson is in contention for her role as a seasoned showgirl in the indie drama The Last Showgirl and is joined in her category by the likes of Kate Winslet (Lee), and Hollywood heavyweights Angelina Jolie (Maria) and Nicole Kidman (Babygirl).

Meanwhile, former Succession co-stars Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) go head-to-head for Best Supporting Actor alongside Denzel Washington (Gladiator II).

The other noted acting nominees include Amy Adams (Nightbitch), Yura Borisov (Anora), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Gabriel LaBelle (Saturday Night), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Jesse Plemons (Kinds of Kindness), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), and Zendaya (Challengers).

Elsewhere, British musician Robbie Williams lands a Best Original Song nod for his track “Forbidden Road” from the musical biopic Better Man while the Aardman animated sequel Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl contests the Best Animated Film category with the likes of Pixar’s Inside Out 2, Disney’s Moana 2, and DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot.

One of the standout nods of the day comes for Payal Kapadia, as the Indian filmmaker receives a surprise Best Director nod for her work on the drama All We Imagine as Light.

The film itself is also on the shortlist for Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language) alongside Brazil’s I’m Still Here, and Germany’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig.

Meanwhile, the Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement line-up sees box-office heavyweights Inside Out 2 and Wicked joined by the likes of blockbuster sequels Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Gladiator II, and Twisters.

Finally, Oscar and Emmy-winning actress Viola Davis is set to be honoured with the 2025 Cecil B. DeMille award for her outstanding contributions to film over the past thirty years.

As to be expected, the Globes omitted several films from their nominations slate, including the likes of Blitz, Civil War, Hard Truths, Nosferatu, The Piano Lesson and Thelma while the notable acting snubs include Jonathan Bailey (Wicked), Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Josh O’Connor (Challengers), Saoirse Ronan (Blitz), June Squibb (Thelma) and Stanley Tucci (Conclave).

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 5 January, with comedian Nikki Glaser on hosting duties.
