2024 Emmy Award nominations: Shōgun takes command while The Bear roars again

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.

In the drama categories, FX’s historical epic Shōgun reigns supreme with a formidable 25 nominations including the coveted Outstanding Drama Series accolade.

Previously conceived as a multi-Emmy-winning miniseries back in 1980, the newest adaptation of the James Clavell novel squares off against a number of new contenders including HBO’s The Gilded Age, Apple TV’s Slow Horses and Prime Video duo Fallout and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Additionally, central stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are both nominated in the lead acting fields while co-stars Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira go head-to-head in Supporting Actor.

Elsewhere, the final series of Netflix’s The Crown secured a majestic eighteen nods which include seven in the major categories. For her portrayal of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Imelda Staunton is shortlisted in Lead Actress while Dominic West earns a Lead Actor nom for playing Prince Charles.

Having won a Golden Globe and Screen Actor’s Guild Award earlier this year, Elizabeth Debicki will be looking to claim a hat-trick of major gongs after landing a Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Princess Diana. Co-star Lesley Manville also contests the same category for her portrayal of Princess Margaret while Jonathan Pryce competes in the Supporting Actor field for playing Prince Phillip.

Surprisingly, the most major nominations in drama go to Apple TV’s The Morning Show with eleven.

The third series of the media-based drama receives double Lead Actress nods for central pair Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon while Billy Crudrup, Jon Hamm and Greta Lee are among several co-stars shortlisted in the supporting categories.

Fellow Apple production Slow Horses finally made its mark on the Emmys after scoring a number of key nods including acting noms for Gary Oldman in Lead Actor and Jack Lowden in Supporting Actor as well as a deserving mention for Outstanding Drama Series.

Meanwhile, Prime Video enjoyed a decent showing in the main line-ups with Fallout becoming only the second video game adaptation to be nominated in the Drama Series field. Fellow programme Mr. and Mrs. Smith (which is based on the hit 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) also fared well with central stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine both acknowledged in the lead acting categories.

The rest of the notable drama contenders include Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Idris Elba (Hijack), Walton Goggins (Fallout), Christine Baranski (The Gilded Age), Nicole Beharie (The Morning Show), Holland Taylor (The Morning Show), and Mark Duplass (The Morning Show).

Over in comedy, FX’s hit programme The Bear has broken a record previously held by NBC’s 30 Rock by garnering a lucrative 23 nominations.

The second series of the kitchen-based dramedy contests the Outstanding Comedy Series field alongside the likes of ABC’s Abbott Elementary, HBO’s Hacks, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and the final series of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Once again, central stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are in contention for acting gongs after winning major honours at the delayed 2023 ceremony back in January.

For his reprised role as hot-tempered chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, White faces stern competition in Lead Actor from Only Murders duo Steve Martin and Martin Short in Lead Actor as well as Larry David’s swansong performance as himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Having won the Supporting Actress prize for the first series, Edebiri now competes in the Lead Actress category for her returning role as Sydney Adamu while Moss-Bachrach contests Supporting Actor as Richard “Richie” Jerimovich. Additionally, co-stars Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas receive their first Emmy nods for their respective roles as Marcus Brooks and Tina Marrero.

Elsewhere, the third series of the school-based mockumentary Abbott Elementary scored seven major nominations that include another Lead Actress nod for creator and current holder Quinta Brunson while co-stars Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams are all nominated in the supporting fields.

Meanwhile, Hacks enjoyed a solid return to the Emmys platform with main star Jean Smart looking to bag a third Lead Actress victory for her acclaimed role as veteran comedian star Deborah Vance alongside supporting deserving noms for co-stars Hannah Einbinder and Paul W. Downs.

Once again, Only Murders in the Building performed well with multiple acting nods including an overdue first mention in Lead Actress for Selena Gomez and a Supporting Actress acknowledgment for Hollywood legend Meryl Streep.

The rest of the notable comedy contenders include Maya Rudolph (Loot), Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Carol Burnett (Palm Royale), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live).
