With the Oscars less than a month away, a number of films and performances have been given a major boost following today’s EE BAFTA nominations.
As expected, the autobiographical epic Oppenheimer leads the way with a staggering thirteen nods, followed in second place by Poor Things with eleven.
Both features face-off in a versatile Best Film category that is rounded off by Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Killers of the Flower Moon.
On top of multiple technical nominations, Oppenheimer also scored a hat-trick of acting mentions for stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr., as well as another Best Director nod for renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan.
For Poor Things, the period comedy also bagged a number of tech mentions, as well as another Best Leading Actress nomination for star lady Emma Stone.
Additionally, it also contests a strong Outstanding British Film category that includes the likes of All of Us Strangers, Napoleon, and Wonka.
Elsewhere, Killers of the Flower Moon clinched a hefty nine nominations, including a Best Supporting Actor slot for the great Robert De Niro.
However, the crime epic did suffer some surprise snubs, including Martin Scorsese for Best Director as well as acting omissions for stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone.
Meanwhile, the dark comedy The Holdovers successfully bagged all seven nominations that it was longlisted for, including a Best Director nod for filmmaker Alexander Payne.
Additionally, Oscar frontrunners Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are among the acting nominees, alongside newcomer Dominic Sessa.
The French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall also celebrated its own ‘magnificent seven’ that included mentions in Best Film and Best Film Not in the English Language, as well as writing and directing noms for filmmaker Justine Triet.
Another two-time nominee is German star Sandra Hüller, who competes in Best Leading Actress for her brilliant performance in Anatomy of a Fall, and in Best Supporting Actress for her turn as the wife of Nazi officer Rudolf Höss in the multi-nominated period drama The Zone of Interest.
Despite its dominance at the box-office and nominations in other award guilds, the hit comedy Barbie only managed five nods at BAFTA, with stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling competing for Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively.
Elsewhere, the psychological drama Saltburn scored a slot for Outstanding British Film as well as three acting mentions for performers Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike and Jacob Elordi.
The latter also contests the public-voted EE Rising Star Award alongside fellow rising stars Phoebe Dynevor, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Sophie Wilde, and recent Golden Globe and Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri.
Meanwhile, Bradley Cooper is in contention for both Best Director and Best Leading Actor for the music-based drama Maestro with the rest of the acting contenders consisting of co-star Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Claire Foy (All of Us Strangers), Paul Mescal (All of Us Strangers), Carey Mulligan (Maestro) and surprise inclusions Vivian Oparah (Rye Lane) and Teo Yoo (Past Lives).
The Best Animated Film category sees The Boy and the Heron and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse compete against the Aardman sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and Pixar’s Elemental while Still: A Michael J. Fox Story and Wham! are among the chief contenders for Best Documentary.
On top of those key Flower Moon omissions, the other surprise snubs made by BAFTA include Jodie Foster (Nyad), Sir Anthony Hopkins (One Life), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Julianne Moore (May December), Mark Ruffalo (Poor Lives) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).
The 77th EE BAFTA Film Awards will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 18 February, with award-winning Scottish actor David Tennant on hosting duties.
