After a long wait, the nominations for the 64th BAFTA Television Awards are finally here.
For the second year in a row, Netflix’s The Crown holds a strong lead with a sizeable ten nods, including three in the major categories.
Once again, the historical drama is shortlisted in the Drama Series field, where it competes against Channel 4’s The End of the F***ing World, and BBC hits Line of Duty and Peaky Blinders.
Additionally, Emmy-winning starlet Claire Foy will seek to win Leading Actress for her returning portrayal of royal monarch Queen Elizabeth II, while co-star Vanessa Kirby earns a Supporting Actress nod for her turn as Princess Margaret.
From the other drama contenders, Line of Duty bagged a further three noms including a Leading Actress nod for Thandie Newton and a welcoming Supporting Actor mention for Irish performer Adrian Dunbar.
Elsewhere, BBC One trio Howards End, The Moorside and the acclaimed Three Girls are all nominated together in the Miniseries field alongside Channel 4’s The State.
In the case of Three Girls, the powerful fact-based drama, which explores the events surrounding the Rochdale child sex abuse ring, also scored two acting noms for rising stars Molly Windsor in Leading Actress and Liv Hill in Supporting Actress.
Meanwhile, the Single Drama category is also dominated by the BBC, with the future-based royal drama King Charles III competing alongside fact-based dramas Against the Law and Murdered for Being Different and the Hang the DJ episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror.
In the acting fields, the late Tim Pigott-Smith receives a posthumous Leading Actor nomination for his performance as a fictionalised version of a future King Charles in King Charles III.
Fellow nominee Sean Bean receives his first BAFTA nod for the BBC One drama Broken, with the rest of the category filled by young actors Joe Cole (Black Mirror: Hang the DJ), and Jack Rowan (Born to Kill).
Irish performer Sinéad Keenan deservedly earns a Leading Actress nom for her portrayal of grieving mother Mel Jones in the fact-based ITV crime drama Little Boy Blue while co-star Brían F. O’Byrne contests the Best Supporting Actor line-up alongside Anupam Kher (The Boy with the Topknot) and surprise nominee Jimmi Simpson (Black Mirror: USS Callister).
Meanwhile, former soap stars Anna Friel and Julie Hesmondhalgh are both up for Supporting Actress for their respective performances in Broken, and the final series of Broadchurch.
On the funny side of things, BBC Three’s This Country is the standout contender for Best Scripted Comedy, where it faces competition from Channel 4’s Catastrophe, E4’s Chewing Gum and ITV2’s Timewasters.
Co-creator and star Daisy May Cooper is also nominated in a powerhouse Female Comedy Performance category that features Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland), and returning nominees Sian Gibson (Peter Kay’s Car Share) and Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe).
The Male Comedy Performance line-up sees experienced names Rob Brydon (The Trip to Spain) and Toby Jones (Detectorists) up against Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing) and rising star Samson Kayo (Famalam).
Elsewhere, ITV duo Coronation Street and Emmerdale go head-to-head for the Soap & Continuing Drama prize, while a strong International category sees the multi-award-winning HBO series Big Little Lies lock horns with Feud: Bette and Joan, The Handmaid’s Tale and the acclaimed documentary The Vietnam War.
The rest of the major programmes in contention for BAFTA recognition are Ambulance, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Antique’s Roadshow, Britain’s Got Talent, Chris Packham: Asperger’s and Me, The Last Leg, Love Island, Murder in Successville, Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad, Taskmaster and Who Do You Think You Are?.
Meanwhile, the Virgin TV’s Must-See Moments line-up is contested by six standout sequences from last year’s telly, including the grieving mother pilot whale in Blue Planet II, the reveal of the thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, the Night King’s killing of the dragon Viserion in Game of Thrones and Ariana Grande’s emotional performance of “One Last Time” during the One Love Manchester concert.
Once again, this year’s BAFTA Awards ceremony will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 13 May, with Sue Perkins back as host for a second successive year.
