The nominations for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.
Starting with the drama field, the absence of Game of Thrones has brought a new tally leader in the form of HBO’s sci-fi western Westworld with a bulky 22 noms.
The television adaptation of the 1973 film is up for Outstanding Drama Series while cast members Sir Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachael Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Thandie Newton are all nominated across the four acting categories.
Meanwhile, four other new programmes make up the seven-strong Drama Series line-up in the form of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Amazon’s This is Us, and Netflix duo The Crown and Stranger Things. The quartet join Westworld and previous contenders Better Call Saul and House of Cards.
The dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale scored a Lead Actress nomination for central star Elisabeth Moss while co-stars Ann Dowd and Samira Wiley are acknowledged in the supporting categories. However, the most acting nods from a new series comes from the family drama This is Us with four including Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia in the Lead Actor category.
As for the Netflix pair, the historical drama The Crown bagged acting noms for British starlet Claire Foy in Lead Actress and seasoned co-star John Lithgow in Supporting Actor for their respective portrayals of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Meanwhile, the 80s-based sci-fi drama Stranger Things scored first Emmy nods for newcomer Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour in the supporting categories.
The rest of the notable acting contenders include Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Keri Russell (The Americans), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black), Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul), and Mandy Patinkin (Homeland).
