2015 TV BAFTA nominations: Crime pays as Happy Valley, The Missing and Line of Duty lead the way

The nominations for the 61st BAFTA Television Awards have been unveiled.

The crime genre dominates this year’s line-up with BBC quartet Happy Valley, Line of Duty, The Missing and Peaky Blinders among the high-profile contenders fighting it out in the drama categories.

All four programmes are in contention for the Drama Series accolade, with The Missing garnering the most major noms overall.

The series, which centres on a couple’s frantic search for their missing son, also receives two acting nods for cast members James Nesbitt in Leading Actor, and Ken Stott in Supporting Actor.

Nesbitt competes in a powerhouse category that features a welcome back nod for Benedict Cumberbatch in the latest series of Sherlock, and deserving nominations for Jason Watkins as wrongly-convicted ex-schoolteacher Christopher Jefferies in the miniseries The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, and Toby Jones as real-life kit-man Neil Baldwin in the factual drama Marvellous.

Meanwhile, a strong Leading Actress field sees last year’s category winner Sheridan Smith back in contention for her portrayal of Liverpudlian entertainer Cilla Black in the autobiographical series Cilla which also competes in the Miniseries group alongside The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies.

However, she faces fierce competition from two crime-based performances in Sarah Lancashire’s hit role as Yorkshire sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley and Keeley Hawes as troubled law official DI Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty.

The fourth slot in the line-up goes to Georgina Campbell for her powerful role as a domestic abuse victim in the BBC3 drama Murdered By My Boyfriend, which is also in contention for the Single Drama prize.

After missing out on a Drama Series nod last year, the gangster drama Peaky Blinders is finally shortlisted for its second series, though leading man Cillian Murphy is ignored again for his role as criminal Tommy Shelby.

Meanwhile, there are repeat acting nominations for the likes of Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Vicky McClure (Line of Duty), Amanda Redman (Tommy Cooper: Not Like That: Like This), and Stephen Rea (The Honourable Woman) as well as first mentions for Charlotte Spencer (Glue), Adeel Akhtar (Utopia), and James Norton (Happy Valley).

On the funny side of things, Olivia Colman receives her fifth BAFTA nom in four years for her reprised role in the BBC sitcom Rev. with co-star (and on-screen husband) Tom Hollander acknowledged again in the Male Comedy Performance category.

Colman’s former Twenty Twelve colleagues Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes are also in contention for comedy acting gongs for the media satire W1A, while BBC trio Detectorists, Harry & Paul’s Story Of The Twos, and The Wrong Mans fight it out in the Scripted Comedy field.

The other renowned actors to receive comedy nods are Tamsin Greig (Episodes), Catherine Tate (Catherine Tate’s Nan), Matt Berry (Toast of London), and Brendan O’Carroll (Mrs. Brown’s Boys: The Christmas Special).

Away from acting, there were double nods for presenter duo Ant and Dec, with the pair mentioned in Entertainment Performance and Entertainment Programme for their hit ITV series Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

Additionally, BAFTA host Graham Norton also secured two noms for his presenting as well as his popular chat show The Graham Norton Show.

Meanwhile, HBO’s True Detective and Netflix duo House of Cards and Orange is the New Black are all in contention for the International prize while Game of Thrones, The Missing and Sherlock are among the big programmes battling it out to win the Radio Times Audience Award.

The rest of the notable television series fighting for BAFTA honours include The Apprentice, Coronation Street, David Attenborough’s Conquest of the Skies 3D, EastEnders, Grand Designs, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Strictly Come Dancing, and The Voice.

Once again, this year’s ceremony will take place at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, London on Sunday 10 May with Graham Norton hosting for the third year in a row.
