It’s that time of year again folks, welcome to the first part of the 2025 OSCAS (On-Screen Community Awards)!
Unsurprisingly, it has been another epic year of television that has provided a wide range of quality across the small-screen, whether it be on different channels like BBC and ITV or streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV.
The past year saw alpha mum Amanda find herself in new surroundings in the well-received Motherland spin-off Amandaland, while South Park went there with their gruelling depiction of maligned US President Donald Trump.
Elsewhere, Joanna Scanlan and West End star Rosalie Craig led an all-female and menopausal rock band in BBC’s Riot Women, while fixer Tom Hardy locked horns with criminal couple Pierce Brosnan and Dame Helen Mirren in the explosive MobLand.
In terms of comebacks, Matt Murdock and his alter-ego Matt Murdock made a positive return to television with Daredevil: Born Again, while Hank Hill and his friends and family found a new home on Disney+ in the long-awaited return of King of the Hill.
Additionally, audiences were introduced to a number of new stories and characters, including an overburdened studio executive, an autistic criminologist, a former golf professional, a deaf lipreader, and a moody former detective based in Edinburgh.
Once again, Merseyside took centre stage as James Nelson-Joyce became a household name with multiple appearances across the small-screen including notable roles in A Thousand Blows and This City is Ours, while Ellis Howard made an impressive breakthrough with his portrayal of trans teenager Byron in the fact-based miniseries What It Feels Like for a Girl.
In the case of other true-life events, the Lockerbie disaster was covered twice in two compelling dramas; Lockerbie: A Search for Truth and The Bombing of Pan Am 103, while the impulsive killing of Brazilian man Jean Charles de Menezes was explored in the exceptional miniseries Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.
Other real-life figures to see their stories brought to life on the small-screen ranged from Margaret Thatcher, Belle Gibson, Ruth Ellis, and William the Conqueror, to Ann Ming, Ed Gein and the Guinness family.
Additionally, we bid farewell to revered characters Helen Norville, Dale Jennings, Jack, Danny, Cassian Andor, June Osborne and Vinnie O’Neill, while continuing to follow the adventures of Mark Scout, Reece Duffy, Deborah Vance, Ava Daniels, Chef “Carmy” Berzatto, Mandy Carter, Alan Partridge, the SAS, the teachers of Abbott Elementary, the Slough House team and the coppers of Blackthorn police station.
And of course, who can forget the remarkable feat of Netflix’s powerful single-shot drama Adolescence, which touched many a nerve with its gut-punch power and staggering performances. Inevitably, Emmys came aplenty for all involved with Stephen Graham finally earning the recognition he had long deserved, while aided by the stunning debut of teenage newcomer Owen Cooper.
With all said and done, here are the first set of winners from this year’s On-Screen Community TV Awards….
