With less than 6 months to go until the much anticipated Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit is released, one of the stars of the original trilogy has spoken about his return and what audiences can expect from the new film.
Elijah Wood who played the main hero Frodo Baggins in the successful trilogy from 2001 to 2003 spoke to Collider about his experiences on returning to the production and the world of Middle-Earth.
“Returning to that space, it’s largely the same group of people who had made The Lord of the Rings. I was definitely aware of the fact that there were more trucks now and more trailers, and the production feels larger in scale. On a technological level, obviously that’s a huge part of it, as well. But, at the end of the day, it’s still the same group of people, making it very much in the same spirit… so that intimacy and that family aspect on set is still the same.”
It was Wood’s return to the set of Hobbiton (where the hobbits live) that left him feeling nostalgic about coming back to a former film location but also disappointed that it would only be for a short period of time.
“It was too short – my involvement is so small. It was a gift to go back… I was in Hobbiton again, for the first time in 11 years. I turned 19 in Hobbiton. I’m 30 now. That put a lot of things into perspective. It was beautiful. It was just beautiful to go back. I only worked a small amount when I was there. I was there for a month, and the majority of my time was just going to set every day and meeting a lot of the new cast members and catching up with old friends and being in Wellington again. It feels like home, and those people feel like extended family to me. It was such a treat to go back.”
Frodo Baggins is only making a cameo in The Hobbit with his uncle Bilbo (now played by Martin Freeman) being the main focus in his earlier adventures which lead up to the events of Lord of the Rings.
Other Lord of the Rings stars who are appearing in the two prequels are Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and Andy Serkis (Gollum).
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14th.
