After its recent successes at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri bolstered its Oscar bid during last night’s EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony.
The comedic drama, which centres on a scornful woman and her decision to challenge the authorities of her town over their failure to solve her murdered daughter’s case, picked up five accolades, including the prestigious Best Film prize, ahead of the likes of Dunkirk and The Shape of Water.
Having already won a Globe and SAG Award in the past month, Frances McDormand edged closer towards another Oscar triumph after winning Best Leading Actress for her performance as scorned mother Mildred Hayes.
Despite immense pressure from Hugh Grant (Paddington 2), Sam Rockwell took home the Best Supporting Actor gong for his role as alcoholic police officer Jason Dixon.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also secured a Best Original Screenplay win for British playwright Martin McDonagh, while the drama also clinched the Outstanding British Film prize ahead of the likes of Darkest Hour, The Death of Stalin and (disappointingly) Paddington 2.
Despite coming into this year’s ceremony with the most nominations (twelve), the romantic fantasy The Shape of Water had to settle for just three wins.
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro nabbed another Best Director award for his work behind the camera, while the film also landed Best Production Design and Best Original Music for composer Alexandre Desplat.
Meanwhile, British veteran Gary Oldman finds himself on the verge of a golden statuette after picking up Best Leading Actor for his portrayal of prime minister Winston Churchill in the war drama Darkest Hour, which also won Best Makeup & Hair.
As with her fellow acting winners, Allison Janney is also looking assured of Oscar glory after clinching Best Supporting Actress for her turn as LaVona Golden, the abusive mother of disgraced ice skater Tonya Harding in the sports biopic I, Tonya.
Elsewhere, the sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049 nabbed double victories for Best Cinematography and Best Special Visual Effects while there were also wins for the likes of Call Me by Your Name (Best Adapted Screenplay), Baby Driver (Best Editing), Phantom Thread (Best Costume Design), and Dunkirk (Best Sound).
In other significant categories, Pixar’s Coco eased its way to another Best Animated Film prize, while I Am Not Your Negro and the South Korea drama The Handmaiden were the respective winners of Best Documentary and Best Film Not in the English Language.
Meanwhile, British rookie Daniel Kaluuya was the latest young prodigy to win the EE Rising Star Award as the Get Out actor overcame stern competition from the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Tessa Thompson.
Finally, veteran British filmmaker Ridley Scott was awarded this year’s BAFTA Fellowship for his work on memorable films including Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Legend (1985), Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), The Martian (2015) and more recently, All the Money in the World.
This year’s ceremony was led by actress and presenter Joanna Lumley, who performed splendidly well on a night that also saw a number of attendees wear black in support of the Times Up and #MeToo movements.
