A young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality in Moonlight trailer

The official trailer for Moonlight has arrived online.

The indie drama has generated strong buzz after premiering at the Telluride Film Festival in September. Additionally, it also scored six nominations from yesterday’s Golden Globe Awards announcement.

Written and directed by Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy), the film centres on a young African-American man who grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.

With the story taking place across three different time periods, the role of young protagonist Chiron is played by newcomer Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton Sanders (The Retrieval), and Trevante Rhodes (Open Windows).

Additionally, the rest of the ensemble includes Naomie Harris (Skyfall, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Mahershala Ali (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, House of Cards), André Holland (The Knick, Selma), and newcomers Jharrel Jerome and Janelle Monáe.

Moonlight will be released in the UK on 17 February.
