2026 Oscar nominations: Sinners sets new record with sixteen nods

They’re here, they’re here!

After weeks and weeks of anticipation, the 2026 Academy Award nominations have finally been announced on what proved to be an extraordinary day for Sinners.

The period horror, which centres on two Mississippi twin brothers and their fight to survive a great evil in their hometown, has set a new record by earning a whopping SIXTEEN nods, the most for any motion picture in a single Oscars year.

By doing so, Sinners eclipses the original record of fourteen which was previously held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).

Unsurprisingly, the film competes in the prestigious Best Picture category, with filmmaker Ryan Coogler securing a hat-trick of nominations for his writing, directing and producing.

Central star Michael B. Jordan competes in the Best Actor field for his dual roles as Elijah “Smoke” and Elias “Stack” Moore, while co-stars Wunmi Mosaku (as Annie) and Delroy Lindo (as Delta Slim) are also acknowledged for their supporting turns.

The film is also in contention for a number of technical awards which include editing, cinematography, visual effects, and the newly-formed Best Casting accolade.

Elsewhere, the countercultural epic One Battle After Another scored a strong tally of thirteen nominations and will look to challenge Sinners in the Best Picture line-up.

Once again, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson earns double nods for writing and directing, while leading man Leonardo DiCaprio (as Bob Ferguson) scores another Best Actor mention ten years after winning the category for The Revenant (2015).

Additionally, co-stars Benicio del Toro (as Sergio St. Carlos) and Sean Penn (as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw) lock horns in the Best Supporting Actor field, with recent Golden Globe winner Teyana Taylor (as Perfidia Beverly Hills) in contention for Best Supporting Actress.

However, newcomer Chase Infiniti had the misfortune of being snubbed in the Best Actress category despite scooping a number of key mentions at various award guilds, including the Globes and the Actor Awards.

Meanwhile, there are nine nominations apiece for three other Best Picture contenders; the gothic drama Frankenstein, the sport-based dramedy Marty Supreme and the Norwegian drama Sentimental Value.

After missing out on the Best Actor Oscar last year, prolific star Timothée Chalamet will look to go one better after landing another nod for his performance as aspiring table tennis contender Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme.

In the case of Sentimental Value, the film picked up four acting nominations for its ensemble with Renate Reinsve (as Nora Borg) contesting Best Actress, while co-stars Stellan Skarsgård (as Gustav Borg), Elle Fanning (as Rachel Kemp) and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (as Agnes Borg Pettersen) are all acknowledged in the supporting fields.

It was also a solid day for Hamnet as the historical drama secured a healthy eight mentions including Best Picture, and writing and acting nods for filmmaker Chloé Zhao.

Once again, Irish star Jessie Buckley competes in the Best Actress category for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare, though co-star Paul Mescal was surprisingly overlooked for his supporting turn as William Shakespeare.

The rest of the Best Picture line-up is completed by the sci-fi dramedy Bugonia, the Formula One drama F1, the political thriller The Secret Agent and the period drama Train Dreams with the quartet all earning four nominations each.

In terms of the other acting nominees, Wagner Moura becomes the first Brazilian man to land a Best Actor nod for his role as Armando Solimões in The Secret Agent and is joined in his category by Ethan Hawke’s portrayal of lyricist Lorenz Hart in the music-based dramedy Blue Moon.

Once again, two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone will be targeting a hat-trick of Best Actress wins for her latest role as Michelle Fuller in Bugonia.

Meanwhile, Rose Byrne earns her first nomination for her lauded performance as Linda in the psychological dramedy If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You, while fellow Aussie native Jacob Elordi scores a Supporting Actor mention for his role as the Creature in Frankenstein.

On the comeback front, Amy Madigan finds herself in contention for an Oscar for the first time since 1986 after landing a Supporting Actress nod for her thrilling turn as Gladys in the horror Weapons, with Kate Hudson scoring her first nom since 2001 for her leading role as Claire Sardina in Song Sung Blue.

Elsewhere, Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters secures double nods for Best Animated Film and Best Original Song for the worldwide hit track “Golden”, while divisive songwriter Diane Warren earns yet another Oscar nomination for the song “Dear Me” from the documentary Diane Warren: Relentless.

Meanwhile, the Best International Feature category is contested by the aforementioned The Secret Agent and Sentimental Value as well as France’s It Was Just an Accident, Spain’s Sirāt and Tunisia’s The Voice of Hind Rajab.

The other notable films to earn Oscar nominations include Avatar: Fire and Ash, Elio, Jurassic World: Rebirth, The Lost Bus, The Perfect Neighbor, The Smashing Machine, The Ugly Stepsister and Zootopia 2.

As expected, it was a difficult day for a number of films and performances that were completely overlooked by the Academy.

Despite seeing its predecessor land ten nominations at last year’s Oscars, Wicked: For Good failed to pick up a single mention with stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both left out of the acting categories alongside fellow snubbed performers Odessa A’Zion (Marty Supreme), Miles Caton (Sinners), Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Gwyneth Paltrow (Marty Supreme) and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia).

The other major films to be completely blanked by the Academy were Cover-Up, Die My Love, Hedda, A House of Dynamite, Jay Kelly, No Other Choice, Nouvelle Vague, Nuremberg, Sorry, Baby, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, Superman, The Testament of Ann Lee and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

The 98th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 16 March, with beloved comedian and podcaster Conan O’Brien back on hosting duties for a second consecutive year.
