It was another exhilarating day for awards lovers as the nominations for this year’s EE BAFTAs were unveiled earlier this afternoon.
In a change of tradition, the British Film Academy opted to announce their nominees AFTER the Oscars, though the end result produced a similar outcome for two particular films.
As predicted, the countercultural epic One Battle After Another and the period horror Sinners have both taken centre stage with a mighty haul of 27 nods combined – fourteen for the former, and thirteen for the latter.
Both films are shortlisted for the prestigious Best Film prize, while filmmakers Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryan Coogler earn double nods for writing and directing their respective films.
In the case of One Battle, the film scored an impressive five acting mentions for its ensemble with Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio contesting the Leading Actor category, while newcomer Chase Infiniti bounced back from the disappointment of an Oscar snub last week by landing the first of two individual nods for her leading role.
Additionally, Golden Globe winner Teyana Taylor and seasoned co-stars Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn are all in contention for the supporting accolades.
After earning a historic sixteen Oscar nominations last week, Sinners continued to wrack up a healthy dose of nods with Michael B. Jordan and British performer Wunmi Mosaku both acknowledged for their performances.
Elsewhere, the historical drama Hamnet and the sports dramedy Marty Supreme produced strong showings with eleven nods apiece, which include a place on the Best Film Shortlist.
Once again, Irish starlet Jessie Buckley will look to strengthen her Oscar chances after landing a Leading Actress mention for her powerful turn in Hamnet with co-star Paul Mescal and Emily Watson also receiving nods in the supporting fields.
Meanwhile, Timothée Chalamet is hoping to seize the initiative in the Best Actor race following another nod for Marty Supreme, with Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) among his chief competition.
The Best Film line-up is rounded off by the Norwegian drama Sentimental Value, which scored a welcoming eight nods, including three for cast members Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and veteran performer Stellan Skarsgård.
Elsewhere, the biographical drama I Swear made a decent impact on this year’s nominations with five including a place on an Outstanding British Film shortlist that also features the likes of Hamnet, The Ballad of Wallis Island, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Pillion and 28 Years Later.
Additionally, Robert Aramayo earns a deserving Leading Actor nod for his portrayal of Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson, while seasoned co-star Peter Mullan is up for the Supporting Actor prize.
The rest of the notable acting nominees are Odessa A’zion (Marty Supreme), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Carey Mulligan (The Ballad of Wallis Island) and Emma Stone (Bugonia).
Meanwhile, the Best Film Not in the English Language category is contested by the likes of It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent and The Voice of Hind Rajab, while the Pixar sequel Zootropolis 2 is up for both the Animated Film, and Children’s and Family Film awards
As previously announced, the aforementioned Robert Aramayo and Chase Infiniti are also in contention for the EE Rising Star Award, with the rest of the category completed by Miles Caton, Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling.
Despite receiving Oscar nominations last week, Amy Madigan (Weapons) and Delroy Lindo (Sinners) were both overlooked by the British Academy, while the other high-profile acting omissions included Russell Crowe (Nuremberg), Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love) and Andrew Scott (Blue Moon).
The 79th EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will be held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday 22 February, with Scottish actor and presenter Alan Cumming on hosting duties for the first time.
