The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards are finally here on what turned out to be an exceptional day for Apple TV+.
Two of the streaming service’s biggest programmes have dominated this year’s line-up, with Severance well on top in the drama categories.
The long-awaited second series of the acclaimed sci-fi drama scored a remarkable 27 nods, which include multiple mentions for its cast, as well as a place on the prestigious Outstanding Drama Series shortlist.
On the acting front, central stars Adam Scott and Britt Lower are both nominated for their respective leading roles as Lumon employees Mark Scout and Helly R., while male trio Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman and John Turturro go head-to-head in the Supporting Actor category.
Co-star Patricia Arquette also receives a Supporting Actress nod, while actor and filmmaker Ben Stiller earns another Emmy mention for his direction of the lauded finale ‘Cold Harbor’.
Severance competes in a powerhouse Outstanding Drama Series line-up that also includes HBO Max trio The Last of Us, The Pitt and The White Lotus.
All three programmes enjoyed a strong showing in the drama fields, scoring a combined 49 nominations spread across the primary and technical categories.
In the case of The White Lotus, the third series of the black comedy anthology bagged 23 nods with multiple cast members shortlisted for supporting honours, including British duo Aimee Lou Wood and Jason Isaacs and American stars Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins and Sam Rockwell.
Despite divisive reviews, the second series of The Last of Us nabbed an impressive sixteen nominations, with chief stars Bella Ramsay and Pedro Pascal both up for lead acting honours.
Meanwhile, the medical drama The Pitt picked up a decent haul of thirteen nods, with former ER star Noah Wyle an early favourite for the Lead Actor award for his turn as traumatised physician Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
Elsewhere, the final series of Disney+’s Andor contests the Outstanding Drama Series category alongside Netflix’s The Diplomat, Hulu’s Paradise and Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, while Kathy Bates becomes the oldest woman to be nominated in the Lead Actress field for her performance as retired lawyer Madeline “Matty” Matlock in CBS’s Matlock.

On the funny side of things, Apple TV+ continued to reap the benefits as The Studio tied the record for the most nominations in a single year for a comedy series with 23 – a record previously held last year by the second series of FX’s The Bear.
The Hollywood-based satire competes in a formidable Outstanding Comedy Series line-up that includes the likes of The Bear, as well as ABC’s Abbott Elementary, HBO Max’s Hacks, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and fellow Apple TV+ production Shrinking.
From the starry ensemble, Seth Rogen earns a Lead Actor nod for his humorous role as overburdened film executive Matt Remick, while co-stars Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara are all in contention for the supporting gongs.
On top of that, the series also scored multiple nominations for its guest stars with Oscar-winning filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard contesting Guest Actor (Comedy) alongside the likes of Bryan Cranston and Anthony Mackie.
After a surprise victory in the Outstanding Comedy Series category last year, Hacks is looking for repeat success after picking up fourteen nods for its fourth series.
Once again, seasoned performer Jean Smart is targeting a fourth Lead Actress win in five years for her acclaimed role as veteran comedian and chat show host Deborah Vance, with formidable co-star Hannah Einbinder looking to finally end her long wait for a Supporting Actress victory.
Meanwhile, The Bear overcame mixed reviews for its third series by scoring a decent thirteen nominations, with four of those going to its principal cast.
As expected, Jeremy Allen White is in the mix for a third Lead Actor gong as troubled chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto while co-star Ayo Edebiri earns double nods for her reprised role as Sydney Adamu as well as her directing of the episode ‘Napkins’.
Additionally, fellow cast members Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas are looking for back-to-back successes after prevailing in the supporting categories last year.
Elsewhere, veteran Hollywood star Harrison Ford finally receives his first Emmy nomination for his supporting turn as grouchy psychiatrist Dr. Paul Rhoades in Shrinking while Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building) are among the chief stars in contention for the lead awards.
The rest of the notable comedy acting contenders include Uzo Aduba (The Residence), Adam Brody (Nobody Wanrs This), Colman Domingo (The Four Seasons), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Michael Urie (Shrinking), Jessica Williams (Shrinking) and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live).

The acclaimed British miniseries, which centres on the arrest and conviction of a teenage boy accused of a terrible crime, competes in a lucrative Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category alongside FX’s Dying for Sex, HBO Max’s The Penguin and fellow Netflix duo Black Mirror and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Meanwhile, fellow Penguin star Cristin Milioti contests the Lead Actress line-up alongside the likes of Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer) and former category winner Michelle Williams, who is looking to clinch another Emmy win for her acclaimed turn as dying podcaster Molly Kochan in the fact-based comedy drama Dying for Sex.
