Last night saw a variety of films and television series receive a boost as Hollywood came together to toast the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards.
History was made in the cinematic fields as the South Korean thriller Parasite pulled off a stunning victory in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
The film, which centres on a poverty-stricken family and their fateful infiltration of a wealthy household, overcame strong competition from the likes of The Irishman and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood to prevail, and by doing so, becomes the first foreign-language feature to win the top prize.
Ahead of the upcoming Oscars, this win came at a crucial time for Parasite, especially after Best Picture rival 1917 triumphed at the Producer Guild Awards on Saturday.
In contrast, the acting races are beginning to look sewn up in all four categories even before the EE BAFTAs take place in a couple of weeks.
In the Leading Male Actor field, Joaquin Phoenix moved a step closer towards Oscar success after prevailing for his performance as mentally-troubled comedian Arthur Fleck in the psychological thriller Joker.
During his speech, Phoenix acknowledged the work of his fellow nominees including Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Driver before dedicating the award to former Joker actor Heath Ledger.
Meanwhile, Renée Zellweger is on track to land her second golden statuette after taking home Leading Female Actor for her portrayal of Hollywood legend Judy Garland in the factual drama Judy.
Once again, Brad Pitt eased his way to victory in the Supporting Male Actor category for his turn as veteran stuntman Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, ahead of The Irishman duo Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.
After accepting the award, Pitt poked fun at director Quentin Tarantino over his foot fetish while offering to post a picture of his award on Tinder.
The fourth predicted win came for Laura Dern, as she bolstered her Oscar chances by clinching Supporting Female Actor for her role as divorce lawyer Nora Fanshaw in the divorce-based drama Marriage Story.
As expected, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize was given to the Marvel epic Avengers: Endgame, which prevailed over the likes of Ford v Ferrari and Joker.
Finally, two-time Oscar-winning legend Robert De Niro was the recipient of this year’s Life Achievement Award for his excellent work in film over the past six decades with memorable roles including Mean Streets (1973), The Godfather: Part II (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), The Deer Hunter (1978), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1982), Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Midnight Run (1988), Goodfellas (1990), Awakenings (1990), Cape Fear (1991), Heat (1995), Casino (1995), Meet the Parents (2000), and Silver Linings Playbook (2012).
However, his latest film The Irishman endured another miserable evening after coming away from last night’s ceremony empty-handed from four nominations.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME
On the television side of things, there was plenty to savour for Netflix’s The Crown and Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as both series triumphed in the drama and comedy categories.
In the case of The Crown, the third series of the historical drama overcame stern competition from the final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones to win the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series accolade.
However, stars Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter missed out on the Female Actor (Drama) gong, which went to Jennifer Aniston for her performance as news anchor Alex Levy in Apple TV’s hit media series The Morning Show.
Despite missing out on the top honour, Game of Thrones still walked away with two awards, with one being an EIGHTH success for Outstanding Stunt Ensemble.
The other accolade went to Peter Dinklage, as he clinched Male Actor (Drama) for his iconic role as Tyrion Lannister, ahead of the likes of Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) and The Morning Show duo Steve Carell and Billy Crudrup.
In the comedy fields, the period dramedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel surprisingly won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for a second year in a row, ahead of the much-fancied Fleabag.
Additionally, seasoned star Tony Shalhoub picked up his second successive Male Actor (Comedy) win for his role as disgruntled father Abe Weissman.
Though Fleabag missed out on the top gong, star and creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge deservedly took home Female Actor (Comedy) for her performance as a long-suffering singleton Fleabag.
Waller-Bridge’s win completes a dominant awards season for her after previous successes at the Emmys last year, and at the Golden Globes earlier this month.
Finally, FX’s autobiographical miniseries Fosse/Verdon scored two key victories for leading stars Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams as the pair preserved for their respective portrayals of film director Bob Fosse and Broadway star Gwen Verdon.
Like the aforementioned Waller-Bridge, Williams’s latest win completes a dominant cycle of awards recognition while Rockwell struck gold in a tough category that included recent Golden Globe victor Russell Crowe (The Loudest Voice), and Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us).
