With just two weeks to go until the 91st Academy Awards take place, it was the turn of BAFTA to recognise some of the key Oscar contenders on a night dominated by two films.
It was an exceptional evening for Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron as he and his drama Roma clinched four awards including the coveted Best Film accolade. As well as winning Best Foreign Language Film, Cuaron himself also picked up awards for his directing and cinematography.
However it must be noted that the last four Best Film winners at BAFTA have failed to go on to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Nevertheless, the Mexican drama remains a strong favourite to land the big one later this month.
On the subject of ‘favourite, the historical dramedy The Favourite ended up with the most wins at it took home seven awards including Best British Film.
Leading ladies Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz both kept their Oscar chances alive with wins in Best Actress and Supporting Actress respectively while the film also scooped Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup & Hair.
Elsewhere, Rami Malek edged closer towards Oscar glory as he picked up another Best Actor gong for his portrayal of legendary singer Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. The Queen biopic was also triumphant in the Best Sound category.
Mahershala Ali remains on course for a second gold statue in three years after he won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the light-hearted dramedy Green Book.
Other renowned names to land BAFTA prizes included Spike Lee for his Adapted Screenplay on the crime biopic Blackkklansman and Bradley Cooper for his musical work on the romantic drama A Star is Born.
The other big winners on the night included Black Panther (Best Visual Effects), Vice (Best Editing), Spider-Man: In the Spider-Verse (Best Animated Film), Free Solo (Best Documentary) and Beast (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer).
However it was a disappointing night for various films like Cold War, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, First Man, If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots and Stan & Ollie which all went home empty-handed.
The EE Rising Star Award was given to Letitia Wright for her rising career in film particularly for her role as Shuri in the Marvel blockbusters Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.
Finally, the BAFTA Fellowship was awarded to veteran editor Thelma Schoonmaker for her work in a number of renowned Martin Scorsese films including Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), Gangs of New York (2002), The Departed (2006), Hugo (2011) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).
