2019 EE BAFTAs: Roma lands top honours while The Favourite scores magnificent seven

With just two weeks to go until the 91st Academy Awards take place, it was the turn of BAFTA to recognise some of the key Oscar contenders on a night dominated by two films.

It was an exceptional evening for Roma as the Mexican drama picked up four key prizes, including the coveted Best Film accolade ahead of the likes of The Favourite and Green Book.

The film, which centres on a Mexican maid and the middle-class family she works for, also clinched Best Film Not in the English Language, while filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón won two awards for his directing and cinematography.

However, it must be noted that the last four Best Film winners at BAFTA have failed to go on to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Nevertheless, Roma remains well posied to land the big one later this month.

On the subject of ‘favourites’, the historical dramedy The Favourite dominated the evening by scoring seven prizes, including Outstanding British Film.

The prolific Olivia Colman overcame Oscar rival Glenn Close to secure the Best Leading Actress gong for her portrayal of royal monarch Queen Anne, while fellow British star Rachel Weisz bolstered her own bid for a second gold statuette by taking home Best Supporting Actress for her role as Lady Sarah Churchill.

Additionally, the film also bagged an additional four wins for Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup & Hair.

Elsewhere, Rami Malek edged closer towards Oscar glory after picking up another Best Leading Actor gong for his portrayal of legendary singer Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. In addition to that win, the Queen biopic also persevered in the Best Sound category.

Meanwhile, Mahershala Ali remains on course for a second Academy Award in three years after winning Best Supporting Actor for his turn as pianist Don Shirley in the fact-based comedy drama Green Book.

Maverick filmmaker Spike Lee tasted BAFTA success for the first time following a Best Adapted Screenplay victory for the crime caper BlackKklansman while Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were honoured with the Best Original Music prize for their work on the romantic tearjerker A Star is Born.

In the other categories, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse clinched another Best Animated accolade win while the other notable winners included Vice (Best Editing), Black Panther (Best Special Visual Effects), Free Solo (Best Documentary) and Beast (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer).

The EE Rising Star Award was presented to Letitia Wright for her rising career in film, particularly her role as Shuri in the Marvel blockbusters Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.

Finally, veteran editor Thelma Schoonmaker was the recipient of this year’s BAFTA Fellowship for her work on a number of renowned Martin Scorsese films including Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), Gangs of New York (2002), The Departed (2006), Hugo (2011) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).

However, it was a disappointing night for a number of multi-nominated films as Cold War, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, First Man, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots and Stan & Ollie all went home empty-handed.
