2018 Emmy Award nominations: Game of Thrones and The Assassination of Gianni Versace draw most nods

The nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.

After taking 2017 off, HBO’s Game of Thrones is back to dominate the drama categories with an impressive 22 mentions and will look to claim a third victory in the Outstanding Drama Series field.

The fantasy epic’s seventh series also earned three acting nods for the Lannister trio of Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) and first-time nominee Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime) in Supporting Actor, and Lena Headey (Cersei) in Supporting Actress.

Despite a less favourable second series, fellow HBO giant Westworld drew a dominant 22 nominations that include Drama Series, and a quartet of acting mentions for Evan Rachel Wood in Lead Actress, Thandie Newton in Supporting Actress, and Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in Lead Actor.

Thrones and Westworld contest a strong Outstanding Drama Series field alongside last year’s winner The Handmaid’s Tale as well as NBC’s This is Us, Netflix duo The Crown and Stranger Things, and the final series of FX’s spy drama The Americans.

After bagging the big prize last year, The Handmaid’s Tale produced another strong showing of major noms with Elisabeth Moss back to defend her Lead Actress gong from dangerous competition including Claire Foy (The Crown), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Keri Russell (The Americans), and previous victor Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black).

Co-star Ann Dowd is also hopeful of a second straight win in Supporting Actress but is up against fellow cast members Alexis Bledel and Yvonne Strahovski.

Meanwhile This is Us star Sterling K. Brown is seeking a repeat win in the Lead Actor category and faces competition from Matthew Rhys (The Americans) while Jason Bateman receives double noms for his acting and directing in the overlooked Netflix crime thriller Ozark.

The other notable contenders vying for the supporting honours include Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), David Harbour (Stranger Things), Mandy Patinkin (Homeland), and Matt Smith (The Crown).

Both programmes are in contention for Outstanding Comedy Series alongside a mix of returning nominees like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Silicon Valley, and newcomers including HBO’s Barry and Netflix’s GLOW.
