Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan are Jay Gatsby and Daisy in official trailer for The Great Gatsby

Every few years, Baz Luhrmann seems to make a glitzy and swiftly-edited film that brings the crowds in. That looks likely to continue following the official trailer for his latest film, the remake of the romantic period drama The Great Gatsby.

Luhrmann who also directed Moulin Rouge! and the underrated Australia, has taken on the responsibility of helming the latest big-screen adaptation from F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel with his Romeo + Juliet star Leonardo DiCaprio playing the lead character Jay Gatsby.

Carey Mulligan (An Education, Shame) co-stars as Gatsby’s love interest Daisy with Tobey Maguire (Spiderman trilogy) and Joel Edgerton (Warrior) providing additional support.

As many audiences know, Luhrmann has always had this style with the making of his films which are usually fast-paced and beautifully decorated. This particular film seems no exception and looks glorious with its colourful art direction and costumes. The casting itself is more intriguing with Mulligan being touted as a contender for Best Actress but we shall have to wait till December before judging it (and the performances).

However the most bizarre aspect of this film is the 3D which is not normally associated with costume dramas but knowing Luhrmann’s style of film-making, it was always likely to happen.

Boxing Day is when the film makes it bow.
