Top Gun director Tony Scott commits suicide aged 68

Tony Scott, the British-born director of several renowned action films from the past thirty years, has died aged 68.

The news of his death was broken by The Daily Breeze who reported that he had thrown himself off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles at around 12.30pm on Sunday in an apparent suicide.

A note had been found in the director’s car which was parked near the bridge before he climbed up and then jumped off, falling 185 feet into the water.

His body was later recovered by a diving team around four hours later.

Scott held a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most prolific blockbuster film-makers particularly when he burst onto the scene with his iconic hit Top Gun (1986) which helped lead actor Tom Cruise become a household name. He was reportedly set to make the long-awaited sequel which was announced a few months back.

He then went on to direct Cruise in the drag-car racing adventure Days of Thunder (1990) as well as helming Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), True Romance (1993), Enemy of the State (1998) and Domino (2005).

He also worked with Oscar-winning actor Denzil Washington who starred in five of his films which were Crimson Tide (1995), Man on Fire (2004), Deja Vu (2006), The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009) and Unstoppable (2010).

He is survived by his wife of 18 years Donna Scott and twin sons Max and Frank as well as his elder brother Ridley Scott who directed Alien and Gladiator.
