The young X-Men try to save a corrupted Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer

Following the underwhelming performance of 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, 20th Century Fox are hoping for better things from the next installment of the comic-book film franchise.

Professor X, Magneto and co. are all back in action next year as they tackle the story of The Dark Phoenix Saga in the upcoming sequel X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Having been delayed until 2019, the film’s official trailer has finally landed online.

Helmed by writer-turned-director Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse), the plot sees Jean Grey being corrupted by incredible powers that turn her into a Dark Phoenix. This causes conflict amongst the X-Men as they try to figure out ways of saving her knowing that she could destroy mankind.

The film welcomes back a number of key stars for the follow-up including James McAvoy (Professor Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey / Phoenix), Jennifer Lawrence (Raven / Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Hank McCoy / Beast), Evan Peters (Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver), Tye Sheridan (Scott Summers / Cyclops), Alexandra Shipp (Ororo Munroe / Storm) and Kodi Smitt-McPhee (Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler).

Two-time Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain (The Help, Zero Dark Thirty, The Martian) is the high-profile casting as she plays the mysterious Smith.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be released in the UK on 5th February 2019.
