The origins of Mufasa and Scar are explored in new trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King

A new trailer has premiered for Mufasa: The Lion King.

Serving as a prequel to the 2019 photorealistic remake of The Lion King, the upcoming Disney family adventure explores the legend of two of the story’s most iconic characters.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk), the plot sees Rafiki relay the legend of former Lion King Mufasa to Simba and Nala’s daughter Kiara. Told in flashbacks, the story follows an orphaned Mufasa as he finds his life changed by a chance meeting with a sympathetic lion named Taka.

The film welcomes a number of new cast members lending their voices including Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad, Foe) as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Waves, Chevalier) as Taka, Tiffany Boone (Hunters, The Midnight Sky) as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga (Wonder Boy for President, The Umbrella Men) as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman (Ridley Road, A Small Light) as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton (Crash, Westworld) as Taka’s mother Eshe, Lennie James (The Walking Dead, Save Me) as Taka’s father Obasi, Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls, The Princess and the Frog) as Mufasa’s mother Afia, Keith David (The Princess and the Frog, Rick and Morty) as Mufasa’s father Masego and newcomer Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara.

From the previous installment, Donald Glover (Simba), John Kani (Rafiki), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (Nala) all reprise their vocals.

Additionally, the film’s music will be written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Encanto) who succeeds original songwriter Elton John.

Mufasa: The Lion King will arrive in UK cinemas on 20 December.
