The mutants are confronted by Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse trailer

Marvel’s focus on the younger versions of the X-Men have been well received by audiences particularly through the prequel flicks First Class (2011) and Days of Future Past (2014).

The formula is set to continue with the third installment of the series, X-Men: Apocalypse, which looks set to bring the entire franchise full-circle.

The film’s official trailer has finally premiered online.

Directed again by Bryan Singer, the plot sees the first ever mutant (Apocalypse) awaken after thousands of years. Unhappy with the new world he has woken up to, he decides recruit a group of notorious mutants including Magneto to reign havoc on Earth. It is left up to Professor X and his young X-Men to try and stop them in order to save mankind.

X-Men prequel actors James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fasbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Raven), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert), Lucas Till (Havok) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) all return for the third outing. The trailer’s final clip shows McAvoy appearing bald which is part of Xavier’s iconic look from when he gets older.

As Apocalypse himself, Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) leads a group of stellar newcomers which also include Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey as well as Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton) as a young Storm, Olivia Munn (The Newsroom, Mordecai) as Psylocke, Tye Sheridan (The Tree of Life, Mud) as Cyclops, Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Nightcrawler and former EastEnders actor Ben Hardy as Angel.

X-Men: Apocalypse will be out in the UK on 17th May 2016.
