Almost two months ago, the cinema world was rocked by the tragic death of actor Chadwick Boseman who succumbed to colon cancer at the young age of 43.

Some small consolation for fans is that they will get to see the Black Panther star on screen for a final time in the upcoming Netflix production Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by August Wilson, the musical biopic sees Boseman in fine company alongside Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis (The Help, Fences) as the real-life singer Ma Rainey.

Netflix have now unveiled an official trailer for the film which gives audiences a decent amount of footage showing Boseman and Davis in musical action.

Directed by George C. Wolfe (Lackawanna Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks), the true story centres on the “Mother of the Blues” as she found herself fighting her white manager and producer for control of her music in 1920s Chicago.

Boseman features in the film as an ambitious trumpeter who is determined to stake his own claim in the industry.

The rest of the ensemble cast includes Colman Domingo (Selma, Fear the Walking Dead), Michael Potts (True Detective, Show Me a Hero), Glynn Turman (The Wire, Fargo), Dusan Brown (42, The Lion Guard) and Taylour Paige (Hit the Floor, White Boy Rick).

As well as having Davis and Wilson’s script involved, the third connection to Fences is a producing role for two-time Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington who also happened to share a previous personal bond with Boseman.

Touted as a potential Oscar platform for both leading actors, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will be streamed on Netflix on 18 December.
