The Enterprise crew are confronted by Idris Elba in Star Trek Beyond trailer

Having orchestrated the monumental return of Star Wars via last year’s hit installment The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams is still showing some commitment towards the other major sci-fi franchise that he helped revive.

The director / producer was responsible for helming the successful Star Trek reboot (2009) as well as its (harshly) criticised sequel Star Trek into Darkness (2013).

However in the case of the latest outing Star Trek Beyond, Abrams has opted to hand directing duties over to Justin Lin who worked on three of the Fast and Furious films.

The official trailer for the threequel has now premiered online.

The story sees the Starship Enterprise almost being destroyed following a devastating attack that leaves Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew being stranded on a remote planet. The group must try to reunite quickly as they are pursued by a sinister alien villain.

Original actors Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Anton Yelchin (Chekov) and John Cho (Sulu) all return for the new film.

An unrecognisble Idris Elba (The Wire, Luther) plays the role of Beyond’s villain Krall while Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Mummy) also features.

Star Trek Beyond will be released in the UK on July 22nd.
