The Crawley estate prepares for a royal visit in Downton Abbey film trailer

When the hit period drama Downton Abbey ended in 2015, devoted fans thought they had seen the last of the Crawley family.

However, it has now emerged that the multi-award winning ITV series is making its comeback via an upcoming film which sees most of the original cast return.

Simply entitled Downton Abbey, the official trailer has finally landed and gives us plenty of hints about what to expect.

The plot sees the wealthy Crawley family (including Robert, Cora, Mary and the cranky Violet) prepping Downton for a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary.

A large majority of original cast members are back for the film which include Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley), Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith Crawley), Jim Carter (Charles Carson), Raquel Cassidy (Phyllis Baxter), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), Brendan Coyle (John Bates), Kevin Doyle (Joseph Molesley), Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates), Harry Hadden-Paton (Bertie Pelham), Robert James-Collier (Thomas Barrow), Allen Leech (Tom Branson), Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes), Elizabeth McGovern (Cora Crawley), Sophie McShera (Daisy Mason), Lesley Nicol (Mrs. Patmore), Douglas Reith (Lord Merton), Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley) and of course, Dame Maggie Smith (Violet Crawley).

There are also a number of solid additions to the incredible ensemble including Geraldine James (Sherlock Holmes, Made in Dagenham), Simon Jones (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Brideshead Revisited), Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game, War & Peace), David Haig (My Boy Jack, Killing Eve), Stephen Campbell Moore (Our Zoo, Red Joan), Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders, The Aftermath) and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake, Pride).

Series creator Julian Fellowes is also onboard as both a screenwriter and producer while Brian Percival (The Book Thief) will helm the big-screen adaptation.

The Downton Abbey film will be released in the UK on 13 September. Splendid!
