The Cinematic Critique End of Year Awards 2012: Part 1

As another terrific year of film comes to a close, it is my privilege to present Part 1 of my End of Year awards. Having been to the cinema more than thirty times, I can safely say there’s been plenty of unforgettable films to look back on and it’s amazing to think how quickly these last twelve months have gone.

Once again, 2012 in cinema has been dominated by various different genres with the mega blockbusters standing out most. The muppets returned to our screens, the great Marvel superheroes banded together to defeat evil, Spider-Man was reborn, Batman came to a fitting conclusion, Jason Bourne was replaced by another, the Expendables added Bruce and Arnie to their team, James Bond came back with a bang and the return of Hobbits and wizards took centre stage in the first prequel to Lord of the Rings.

The other highlights of the year included a silent film triumphing at the Oscars as well as fascinating characters such as a sex-obsessed man, Margaret Thatcher, a courageous horse, a group of clay-motion pirates, a female archer, an un-PC middle-eastern general, an even more un-PC talking teddy, a mentally dysfunctional couple and best of all, Jessica Chastain getting naked! Welcome to Film 2012….
