Tensions arise over the making of Citizen Kane in official trailer for David Fincher’s ‘Mank’

For many cinephiles, next year is set to mark the 80th anniversary of Citizen Kane’s release on the big-screen.

The part-factual / part-fictional drama is widely heralded as one of the greatest films of all time and helped to launch the career of its leading actor and director Orson Welles.

The story behind the film’s troubled production is now the focus of a new biopic entitled ‘Mank‘ which is being helmed by versatile director David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, The Social Network).

Following the release of a teaser a fortnight ago, Netflix have now unveiled a new full-length trailer that shows Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Darkest Hour) in top form as screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz.

The plot centres on Mankiewicz’s struggles with alcoholism as his feud with Orson Welles over the timing of writing a screenplay for Citizen Kane. The film also charts his relationships with various characters that were allegedly incorporated into the Kane story including actress Marion Davies and wealthy pioneer William Rudolph Hearst.

The chief players co-starring with Oldman include Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables) as Davies, Tom Burke (The Musketeers, Strike) as Welles and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Crown) as Hearst.

Lily Collins (Tolkien, Emily in Paris), Arliss Howard (Full Metal Jacket, Moneyball), Tom Pelphrey (Iron Fist, Ozark), Sam Troughton (Chernobyl, The Trial of Christine Keeler), Ferdinand Kingsley (Dracula Untold, Victoria) and Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game, Downton Abbey) also feature in the biopic.

Touted as YET another Oscar contender for Netflix, Mank will be streaming from 4 December.
