The final weekend of Oscar season is finally upon us as two awards shows from both ends of the spectrum selected their winners on Saturday night. However it is all about the big one which takes place later tonight….

Firstly at the Independent Spirit Awards, the Oscar-nominated romantic dramedy Silver Linings Playbook eased its way to four wins at last night’s ceremony including the coveted Best Feature award. It held off competition from the likes of fellow Best Picture nominee Beasts of the Southern Wild as well as Bernie and Moonrise Kingdom.

Film-maker David O. Russell enjoyed a fine evening winning both Best Director AND Best Screenplay for his work on the film while leading star Jennifer Lawrence moved closer to a potential Oscar win as she secured the Best Actress gong for her performance as Tiffany (beating off the likes of Quvenzhane Wallis and Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

However her male co-star Bradley Cooper lost out in Best Actor which was rewarded to Oscar snubbee John Hawkes for his role as a polio sufferer in The Sessions. His own co-star Helen Hunt won Best Supporting Actress which gives her a glimmer of hope of overcoming Anne Hathaway tonight.

Matthew McConaughey clinched Best Supporting Actor for his role in Magic Mike ahead of fellow nominees Michael Pena (End of Watch), Sam Rockwell (Seven Psychopaths) and Bruce Willis (Moonrise Kingdom).

Other well-known films to land awards last night included Beasts of the Southern Wild (Best Cinematography), Safety Not Guaranteed (Best First Screenplay), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Best First Film) and Amour (Best International Film).
