Saoirse Ronan’s Mary Stuart clashes with Margot Robbie’s Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots trailer

Earlier this year, two of Hollywood’s rising starlets went head-to-head for the Best Actress Oscar for which they both lost out to Frances McDormand in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017).

Now Irish actress Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn, Lady Bird) and Australian beauty Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, I, Tonya) find themselves sharing the screen together as they play historical siblings in the upcoming biopic Mary Queen of Scots.

Touted as a potential awards contender, the film’s official trailer has finally landed.

Helmed by Josie Rourke (Much Ado About Nothing, The Vote), the plot centres on Mary Stuart (Ronan), the young Queen of France who is widowed at 18 and decides to return to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. With Scotland and England under the rule of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (Robbie), Mary attempts to get the better of her through betrayal and rebellion which ultimately changes the course of history.

Ronan and Robbie are joined in the cast by Jack Lowden (War & Peace, Dunkirk), Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk), Martin Compston (The Wee Man, Line of Duty), David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch), Gemma Chan (Humans, Captain Marvel), Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey, Me Before You) and Guy Pearce (Memento, The King’s Speech).

The film will be looking to surpass its 1971 predessessor which starred British heavyweights Vanessa Redgrave (as Mary) and Glenda Jackson (as Elizabeth).

Mary Queen of Scots will be released in the UK on January 18th 2019.

  1. Yikes. Mary Queen of Scots was not Elizabeth Tudor’s sister. That would be Mary Tudor, Elizabeth’s older sister who died before Mary (QoS) returned to Scotland from France. Yikes again. Do some basic reasearch?
