SAG winners: Trial of the Chicago 7, The Crown and Schitt’s Creek clinch top honours

The 2021 Oscar race is finally starting to reach its thrilling climax amid the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last night saw the Screen Actor’s Guild recognise the best of film and television in yet another virtual ceremony that proved to be an anti-climax in terms of its big-screen winners.

The factual drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 revived its hopes of winning the Best Picture Oscar after it took home the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast gong. Bolstering a starry cast including Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Rylance, the film overcame strong competition from the likes of Minari and One Night in Miami to put some pressure on current Oscar frontrunner Nomadland.

There was double success for the music-based drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom as the late Chadwick Boseman received the Best Actor award for his powerful performance as trumpet player Levee Green. He is now on course to become only the third actor in Oscar history to win a posthumous Academy Award.

Co-star Viola Davis pulled off a more surprising win in Best Actress as she overcame stern competition from Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) to prevail for her role as blues singer Ma Rainey. She will now be looking to become only the second African-American actress to win her respective category at the 93rd Oscars.

Elsewhere, British star Daniel Kaluuya picked up another Best Supporting Actor prize for his portrayal of Black Panther activist Fred Hampton in the factual drama Judas and the Black Messiah.

Finally, a (welcoming) full set of diverse acting winners was completed by Korean veteran Yuh-jung Youn as she clinched Best Supporting Actress for her role as friendly grandmother Soonja in the family drama Minari.

The other film award on the night saw Wonder Woman 1984 pick up the Best Ensemble Cast award.

Additionally, Gillian Anderson defeated co-stars Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin to take home Best Actress (Drama) for her portrayal of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

Elsewhere in the drama line-ups, Jason Bateman edged out the likes of Josh O’Connor (The Crown) and RegĂ©-Jean Page (Bridgerton) to win Best Actor (Drama) for his performance as Marty Byrde in Ozark.

For Schitt’s Creek, the multi-award winning sitcom clinched Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble (Comedy Series) with Catherine O’Hara scooping another Best Actress (Comedy) gong for her hilarious role as Moira Rose.

However, her co-stars Dan and Eugene Levy were unable to snare the Best Actor (Comedy) award which was won once again by Jason Sudeikis for the football comedy Ted Lasso.

As was the case with the Golden Globes, the two triumphant winners of the Best Actor/Actress in a Limited Series were Mark Ruffalo for the drama I Know This Much is True and Anya Taylor-Joy for the chess-based mini-series The Queen’s Gambit.
