SAG nominations: Bombshell and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel amongst leaders in film and TV categories

After the fallout from Monday’s Golden Globe nominations, the Screen Actor’s Guild have now offered up their list of contenders for 2020.

Three films share the lead; the Fox News-based biopic Bombshell, Netflix’s crime epic The Irishman and the Quentin Tarantino-directed dramedy Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood with four nominations apiece.

All three films made the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture along with the WWII satire Jojo Rabbit and the acclaimed Korean thriller Parasite.

Despite early struggles with the guilds, Bombshell performed well with stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie all nominated for their work. Theron competes in the Best Actress category while Robbie and surprise nominee Kidman go head-to-head in Best Supporting Actress.

Meanwhile, Irishman and ‘Hollywood both picked up double acting nods AND mentions in the Stunt Ensemble category. Irishman stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci go up against Hollywood’s Brad Pitt in Supporting Actor while Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated in Best Actor along with fellow Oscar contenders Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker).

The one negative for Irishman was another key snub for leading man Robert De Niro who is actually due to receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award that night. Ooer…

Elsewhere, Scarlett Johansson enjoyed a solid day as she landed mentions in Best Actress AND Supporting Actress for her performances in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.

Johansson’s competition in Best Actress includes Oscar favourite Renée Zellweger (Judy), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) and Luptia Nyong’o (Us). Supporting Actress includes her Marriage Story co-star Laura Dern and comeback queen Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers).

There were a number of surprise nominees this year with British duo Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari) and Taron Egerton (Rocketman) making the Best Actor line-up while Jamie Foxx is recognised in Best Supporting Actor for the courtroom drama Just Mercy.

Once again, there were some crucial snubs with Little Women completely overlooked having sent its screener late to the voting group. Therefore, there were zero mentions for stars Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh.

Other Oscars contenders to be completely ignored include Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Awkwafina (The Farewell), Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes) and Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell).

The 26th Screen Actor Guild Awards will take place in Hollywood on 20 January 2020.

In the television categories, Amazon’s second series of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has taken pole position with four nominations.

The 1950s-based comedy is shortlisted in Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series while stars Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein and Tony Shalhoub are all nominated in the acting categories.

However, it faces tough competition from the multi-Emmy winning BBC series Fleabag which is also in contention for Best Ensemble (Comedy). Phoebe Waller-Bridge once again is up for Best Actress while co-star Andrew Scott competes in Best Actor.

The rest of the Best Ensemble (Comedy) lineup is competed by Barry, Schitt’s Creek and The Kominsky Method. The latter series also landed double nominations in Best Actor (Comedy) for stars Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.

Elsewhere, Netflix’s historical epic The Crown scored three mentions in the drama categories including Best Ensemble (Drama). Actresses Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter compete in a versatile Best Actress line-up that also includes BAFTA and Emmy winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and The Morning Show’s Jennifer Aniston.

Incidentally, Aniston’s male co-stars Steve Carell and Billy Crudrup go head-to-head in Best Actor (Drama) along with Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones).

Despite its underwhelming final season, Thrones is shortlisted in Best Ensemble (Drama) along with Big Little Lies, The Handmaid’s Tale and Stranger Things. The HBO epic also landed a mention in Best Stunt Ensemble.

In the Limited Series categories, British duo Jared Harris and Emily Watson are acknowledged in Best Actor and Actress for their performances in the real-life epic Chernobyl. Harris’ competition includes Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us), Mahershala Ali (True Detective) and Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon). The fifth slot is held by Russell Crowe (The Loudest Voice) which coincides with the nominations haul for Bombshell; both productions follow the fall of Fox News CEO Roger Ailes.

Finally, the Best Actress (Limited Series) line-up sees Watson go up against The Act duo Patricia Arquette, Toni Collette (Unbelievable) and Emmy winner Michelle Williams (Fosse/Verdon).

The 26th Screen Actor Guild Awards will take place in Hollywood on 20 January 2020.
