SAG Award winners: Spotlight lands Best Ensemble, DiCaprio and Larson amongst acting victors

The Oscar race is once again starting to heat up following the results of last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The battle for Best Picture looks like it will be a close one after the media-based drama Spotlight nabbed the coveted Best Ensemble accolade. The film, which focuses on the Boston Globe’s investigation of the Catholic Church over child abuse, beat off fellow Oscar frontrunner The Big Short as well as Beasts of No Nation, Straight Outta Compton and Trumbo.

In the acting categories, Leonardo DiCaprio moved a step closer to clinching his first Oscar after he won the Best Actor award for his performance as vengeful explorer Hugh Glass in the brutal thriller The Revenant.

Another performer certain to land glory later this month is Brie Larson who scooped Best Actress for her powerful turn as imprisoned mother Joy in the indie-drama Room.

Elsewhere, there was a shock triumph in Best Supporting Actor for British star Idris Elba who celebrated the first of two wins on the night for his role as the ruthless Commandant in the Netflix drama Beasts of No Nation.

His victory came in light of the recent “white Oscars” controversy for which Elba was surprisingly snubbed by the awards group earlier in January. However his success here does affect fellow nominees Christian Bale and Mark Rylance who now need to win at BAFTA in order to provide stern competition for sentimental favourite Sylvester Stallone.

Finally the Best Supporting Actress gong was won by Swedish star Alicia Vikander for her performance as Gerda Wegener in the historical biopic The Danish Girl. She overcame the likes of Rooney Mara and recent Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet.
